My local game shop in Fairhope, Alabama has moved into a bigger space. We now have lots of room to spread out. More and more games are cropping up. There are now two different D&D 4e tables every Monday, plus Magic the Gathering, Settlers of Catan, Warhammer 40K, Pathfinder, Vanguard, Redekai, and much more.

My pleasure, Frog. My taste in RPG's runs toward the freaky and fucked-up: Unknown Armies, Paranoia, Call of Cthulhu, and such. I prefer antiheroes to heroics. Anyone here near Berkeley, CA and itching for a game?

Our group finally finished the Haunting of Harrowstone installment of Carrion Crown (Pathfinder RPG adventure path.) Lots of fun, and lots of spooky ghosts!

Played our second session of Pathfinder: Carrion Crown last night. We began investigating the ruins of Harrowstone prison after checking out a crypt in the local cemetery.

So, does anyone here play Pathfinder or Pathfinder Society? I just played my first game of Pathfinder Society Monday night, and it was fun. The group of guys I play with are too combat oriented though. They can't handle roleplaying for roleplaying's sake. Dealing with NPC's is frustrating, because all they want to do is threaten and attack.

I know a guy who plays Settlers of Catan. He's trying to get me hooked into Pathfinder RPG too. I've got enough expense tied up in getting back into D&D. The three player's handbooks are $30+ each, and that's if I never intend to DM. I can't imagine how expensive it would be to start in a whole new system too.

That's one of the reasons I like the idea of playing a 2nd edition D&D, because I already have a load of materials for that version, and the rest can be found in PDF form on the Intertubez.

As a kid, we played plenty of Monopoly, Life, Sorry, Grand Masters, etc. Then along came video games and I obsessed on Toki, Galaga, Frogger, Tetris. After spending way too many solitary dollars on screens, I played a few strategy games on computers, the Myst series, Tropico, etc. Unfortunately, I played way too much, always on my laptop, which gave me shoulder and elbow problems!!!!!!!!!

Anyway lately, via my brother, who's played D&D for 25 years of his 37, I've been introduced to a new style of social "box" games, French stuff like Citadelle, Colons de Catans, and Thurn and Taxi a German historical postal game, and a few others which I forgot the names of.

 

Their common thread is they use history in a fun context of society building. I have found a new joy in sitting around a table with several friends, a couple of drinks, lots of laughter and competitiveness.

 

It's so much more fun than any computer game!

 

But as for specific role playing games, no I haven't, not in that sense. :)

Played my second game (one encounter) of D&D 4e last night. I'm disappointed with how long the encounters take to play. This was a roleplaying-combat-roleplaying encounter, and the combat rounds took forever. An encounter that could have been played in 30 minutes took over two hours. People were not paying attention, the DM (game shop owner) was taking orders for Magic cards and other merchandise during the game, and there was a lot of just plain goofing around. I'm all for having fun, and keeping humor in the game, but at a certain point the play drags to a halt and it loses my interest. When I start pre-rolling my attacks three or four turns ahead of time, I can tell I'm getting bored.
