In recognition of service to our country, all veterans and active duty military personnel are invited to eat free at Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar Restaurants this Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009.

As you may recall, Applebee’s launched a pilot program last year on Veterans Day offering free entrees to military service personnel and veterans. Because the response was so overwhelmingly positive, Applebee’s is extending the invitation throughout the country this year.

We would appreciate your help in spreading the word. Please help us share details across your various communication channels.

* All U.S. veterans and active duty military with proof of current or former military service will eat free at all Applebee’s nationwide on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009.
* Proof of service includes: U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card, U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card, Current Leave and Earnings Statement, Veterans Organization Card, photograph in uniform or wearing uniform.

My husband is the military member and I think he will be happy to know he isn't the only one, some days I think he is going to go crazy at work. We spent two years in ND and everyday he got into an argument with some closeminded individual. We were so happy to get orders!

Nancy, in my experience we always rip the Coast Guard guys about not being really military. Additionally I believe they are classed more as 'Homeland Security' now, versus 'Military.'

My limited interaction with Coast Guard was that they were not very 'liberal.' Two years stationed on a Air Force base did teach me that the AF was way more 'liberal' than the Army; and have fewer church-goers than the Army.

I served in the US Army from 2000-2006; and consider myself quite lucky to have not seen combat. I was in a Field Artillery unit in the Fire Direction Control section (13C/13D). I also spent some time as supplemental Security Forces on an Air Force Base (full-on cop training, but when you finish training they don't give you a badge, but then you go perform the daily duties of a cop).

My deconversion came late in my military career, and my actual awakening to atheism came after I was out. So I can also count myself lucky in not experiencing pressure or persicution during my time in.

Personally, most of my commanders were very lax on anything religious. In fact I had one tell me he didn't go to church cause he had more important things to get done; and so he didn't expect any of us to waste valuable time there either. Come to think of it, it was his XO that told me faith was for individuals and only ignorant people followed the church. I know most experiences aren't like this though, and it saddens me that non-believers are treated poorly. If you've got the guts to serve your country (especially the last eight years), you should be respected for your service, no matter what you believe in.

Those who don't serve in Gods name can't be trusted. I suppose a secular army would be seen as a legion of the anti-Christ. Next stop Armageddon. It is hard for me to believe that there are people who take such ideas seriously but apparently they do.
