You should be able to do it, yes. We certainly don't encourage the deletion of threads since you may take down dozens or even hundreds of well thought out posts depending on the thread you're considering deleting. (Obviously if it has no replies then that's not an issue.)

There are no replies. It's just a misfire of my own. So how do I delete it?

If you are talking about an individual comment, there should be a little green 'x' at the top right corner of the comment as it appears in the thread.  If you click that, it will give you the option to delete the comment.
