Our Time Is Running Out

Author commentary

What struck me most while reviewing this brief is learning how shockingly close we are to global catastrophe due to the effects of climate change on our planet. I wanted to convey how the changing conditions are already affecting ALL living things and how we’re all connected and rely on each other to sustain life. The image communicates how we’re all in this together and how little time we have to make dramatic changes in our everyday lives otherwise face imminent demise. The single image of man made up of all living things disintegrating in an hourglass fashion combines my concern in what I hope will be an awakening and alarming realization for others.

Johnny, I wanted to see that movie. So happy to know that I can see it on Netflix as a 'view now' selection. Tonight's the night! Thanks.

I just watched "Food, Inc." last night. I thought it was really good, a real eyeopener, and a look behind the scenes at factory farming (and the pollution and poor treatment of animals that's related). It is currently available streaming on Netflix if you have a membership.

Bolivia Bans Circus Animals

In July, Bolivia became the first country in the world to ban the use of animals in circuses, a form of entertainment that goes back at least to ancient Rome. It was an investigation by a U.K.-U.S. advocacy group called Animal Defenders International that led to passage of the law. ADI had documented routine animal abuse in Bolivian circuses, including keeping bears in cages in which they could barely move. But the law led to a difficult question: What do you do with circus animals that can't be returned to the wild? Larger Bolivian circuses are simply planning to relocate to other countries, but smaller, family-owned companies that are going out of business will need to find homes for about two dozen lions and primates. Animal sanctuaries may be an answer, but the Bolivian government has pointed out that the sanctuaries are not always professionally staffed. In other words, the law of unintended consequences applies even to the most humane acts.
