This Is OUR Moment

The United States of America can lead in the development of clean energy technology and manufacturing while we lead in the fight against global warming.

Everyone knows we have a dependence on oil we buy from countries that don't share our values. This threatens our security and our integrity. And it needs to stop. We know it does. Still, we've seen our dependence on foreign oil grow and pollute the air we breathe and endanger our planet. But we can change that. Now.

There's a bill in the Senate that will break foreign oil’s stranglehold on our country, reduce carbon pollution, and create jobs right here in America—good jobs that pay well and can't be outsourced.

It’s one of the most important pieces of legislation of our time. It's a clean energy bill. And it’s been a long time coming.

Email your Senators to pass the Clean Energy Jobs & American Power Act. This is our moment.

General Mills Palm Oil Causes Rainforest Destruction

General Mills uses palm oil from plantations that destroy huge tracts of rainforests in Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. Palm oil is a common ingredient in General Mills brands and products, from Betty Crocker and Pillsbury to Nature Valley Granola Bars and Yogurt Burst Cheerios.

In the last five years, demand for palm oil by U.S. companies like General Mills has tripled, resulting in the clearing and burning of rainforests for palm oil plantations. This has put Indigenous and forest-dependent people in jeopardy, as well as endangered species like orangutans, Sumatran tigers and elephants.

General Mills must commit to sourcing only socially and environmentally responsible palm oil. Send a letter to the CEO of General Mills, Mr. Kendall Powell and let him know you don't want rainforest destruction in the General Mills products you buy!

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) is moving to eliminate the Clean Air Act's ability to protect Americans from global warming.

We need your help today to fight back.

Please take action today: Email your Senators to oppose the Murkowski bill.

Background:

In 2007, the Supreme Court ruled that global warming pollutants are covered by the Clean Air Act. The Obama EPA has begun carrying out the law by taking steps to limit global warming pollution from cars and from large power plants and factories.

Instead of embracing this progress, Senator Murkowski's measure would strike at the heart of the Clean Air Act, blocking these actions and letting America's biggest polluters off the hook.

And she is using a little-known procedural maneuver called the Congressional Review Act under which a "resolution of disapproval" can move very quickly to the Senate floor, perhaps in a matter of days – and requires only 51 votes to pass.

If enacted, the measure would permanently bar the Environmental Protection Agency from requiring polluters to cut their emissions of greenhouse gases.

It's a veritable "Dirty Air Act," and it’s a serious threat to our fight against global warming.

Please take action today: Urge your Senators to oppose the Murkowski attack on the Clean Air Act. Sign the Petition:

Help Needed for the Animals of Haiti: Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti

Written by Jace Shoemaker-Galloway
Published on January 19th, 2010

As people around the world watch the unimaginable images being streamed out of Haiti, humanitarian aid is finally reaching the people that have been devastated by the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck on January 12, 2010. Food, water, medical provisions, shelter and supplies are slowly reaching those affected by the catastrophe.

But the animals of Haiti are also in need. For the millions of livestock, pets and large stray dog population, help is urgently needed for the four-legged victims of the devastating earthquake that ravaged the nation. An international relief effort, the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH), is currently underway to help the many animals of Haiti.
Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH)

The international effort, headed by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the World Society for the Protections of Animals (WSPA), currently includes the ASPCA, American Humane Association, Humane Society International, United Animal Nations (UAN), Kinship Circle and Best Friends Animal Society.

Water, food and medical supplies for the animals are being collected and will be used in a mobile veterinary clinic donated by the Antigua and Barbuda Humane Society. The mobile clinic will not only treat injured pets, livestock and wild animals, but will also vaccinate animals to ward off any outbreaks of disease.

A team of disaster responders have gathered in the Dominican Republic and are waiting to get into Haiti. Due to the collapse of the infrastructure and massive destruction in Haiti, the team is committed to help the animals despite the dangers. According to IFAW, once human relief efforts and security measures are in place, the team will be deployed into Haiti. The mobile clinic will be driven from the Dominican Republic into Haiti.

Donations are urgently needed to purchase vaccines, antibiotics, bandages and other supplies for the mobile clinic. If you would like to help, please visit the IFAW website.
