Uh Oh Cheerios Causes Rainforest Destruction

Cheerios may be good for your heart, but not so good for the world's rainforests, communities and the climate.

Cheerios, and other favorite General Mills cereals like Trix, Lucky Charms and Wheaties, contain palm oil-derived ingredients grown on plantations that destroy rainforests in Southeast Asia.

The Facts

*Over 100 General Mills products contain palm oil or palm oil derivatives

*Approximately 85 percent of palm oil is grown on industrial plantations that eradicate the homes and livelihoods of local people

*Palm oil plantations threaten highly endangered species like orangutans, Sumatran tigers and elephants

*Deforestation causes climate change by producing 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions

*General Mills markets its products primarily to parents and children, dragging them unknowingly into this chain of destruction

I haven't gone to the site yet, but I will pass on this great website to others. What an amazing idea.

I wish I could give some of these condoms to my friend to pass out who recently moved to Kansas. She just had her first baby at 32, but has met many a very young mother in the Breast Feeding group she joined. One young woman is 25, has three kids, the oldest is eight and lives with her mom. Another young lady is only 23, has two kids, the oldest is six and he also lives with her mom.... I guess there is not much to do in a poky Midwestern town except make babies and act like you don't know anything about using birth control.

Previously thought to be a mythical creature, a team led by Tsunemi Kubodera, from the National Science Museum in Tokyo, tracked and photographed the 26-foot long Architeuthis as it attacked prey nearly 3,000 feet deep off the coast of Japan's Bonin islands.

It wasn’t quite King Kong, but gigantic apes, Gigantopithecus blackii, lived alongside humans for over a million years. Fortunately for the early humans, the 10-foot tall and 1,200 pound primate's diet consisted mainly of bamboo. Unfortunately for the apes, humans likely out-competed the beast for living space, eventually leading to its extinction.

A sea turtle can grow to 200 pounds or more, but despite its size, many die from being choked by six-pack holders or from getting trapped in abandoned fishing nets.

Plane Stupid

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxis7Y1ikIQ

Hurtling through the sky, and accompanied by the sound of a jet, polar bears come crashing down in this shocking ad, seen in cinemas across the UK from November 2009. The point of the ad? Its creators, Plane Stupid, claim that "an average European flight produces over 400kg of greenhouse gases for every passenger," which is roughly the weight of a polar bear.

As my high school chemistry teacher used to tell us (repeatedly), the most stupid thing you can do with oil is burn it; it is far too valuable for that. Almost everything you can think of in our homes, shops and workplaces, depends on oil; it is really hard to conceive of a western lifestyle without it. We need to stop burning it long before it runs out and not just for the climate change reasons.

I guess that's a yes. *sigh* time to prepare for the end of mankind.
