Free Will: (Literally) An Intelligent Choice

It seems nobody agrees on just what free will is. But no matter how you perceive it, free will must involve volitional choice at some point.

To me, free will is self-determinism and arises naturally from "reciprocal causation" (a.k.a. feedback loop). Read "Refutation of Hard Determinism and Serious Potential for Free Will" for a full explanation.

The featured discussion, "Refutation of Hard Determinism and Serious Potential for Free Will" details the false dichotomy and the misapplication of physics leading hard determinists astray. At the same time, it points out how reciprocal causation (feedback) is the likely mechanism behind free will . . . which isn't surprising once you understand that it's the mechanism behind consciousness, memory, imagination and intelligence. No woo. No dualism. No violation of natural law.

Hard-hitting and friendly debate is welcome and encouraged here but, please, use the Discussion Forum for debates and discussions -- use the Comment Wall for brief comments.

Thanks.

Michio's point seems to be that because of quantum uncertainty, you can't predict future events based on past ones.  Watch for yourself Continue

We found evidence of millions of neurons firing together every time you hear a sound right next to millions of neurons ignoring external sounds but firing together every time you speak

. . .

with the finding of sub-regions of brain cells each tasked with a different volume control job -- and located just a few millimeters apart -- the results pave the way for a more detailed mapping of the auditory cortex to guide brain surgery

It's so cool how neuronal activity can be distinguished and tracked with a granularity down to the millimeter level.

Interesting article on excitatory versus inhibitory signals, doone. I love neurology-related articles.

Sorry Fred, I didn't know you were a fan of the topic. Besides, I created the group (as sent out invitations) before I knew you.
I'm too obsessed with this topic, Fred. And, besides, the group is not very active.
