America the Ignorant

Silly Things We Believe About Witches, Obama, and More

By David A. Graham

Chances are that by now you've heard about the Aug. 19, 2010, Pew poll that found that nearly one fifth of Americans (mistakenly) believe that President Obama is a Muslim. Perhaps you think that a terrifying outlier; or perhaps you're a believer, and then you are in good company. Either way, you're wrong: in fact, remarkably high numbers of Americans believe the most unusual things. Although the portion of poll respondents who believe Obama is a Muslim has risen recently, some of these oddball opinions contain more consistent numbers of believers. Here's a sampling of the nuttiest.

Why gays shouldn’t vote GOP
Nov. 10: Daily Rant: The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur discusses why the Republican Party continues to fight against the repeal of “Don’t ask, don’t tell.”

"Not all red-leaning voters this election are hereby screwed. If you're tremendously wealthy and/or run a very large corporation, you're feeling damn good right about now. Wall Street is giddy like Charlie Sheen in a Bangkok brothel, eager for more deregulation, bigger bonuses, less oversight. The CEOs of every oil comp...any in the world are positively orgasmic knowing that their GOP breathren will now asphyxiate all attempts at new environmental legislation and regulation. And so on.

But if you are a lower to middle-class Republican, Tea Partier or flip-flopping indie voter, you are now in the most delightfully ironic position of all -- you think you just voted yourself more voice, when in fact you voted for far less. You think yourself a lion; you're actually the meat. You actually just voted yourself an even lower position on the food chain. Congratulations."

Dear Tea Party: You will now get yours

Kill All Grizzlies
November 10, 2010

Bryan Fisher writes: Time for open season on Yellowstone grizzlies.

One human being is worth more than an infinite number of grizzly bears. Another way to put it is that there is no number of live grizzlies worth one dead human being. If it’s a choice between grizzlies and humans, the grizzlies have to go. And it’s time.

He's referring to an article which states that 48 grizzlies have been killed in the Yellowstone Park area.

Now two people have also died, which barely rates a mention in her column. In fact, her opening sentence oozes with sympathy for these poor, misunderstood creatures: “It's been a bad year for grizzly bears, and, if forecasts prove correct, it's only going to get worse.”

And he concludes:

God makes it clear in Scripture that deaths of people and livestock at the hands of savage beasts is a sign that the land is under a curse. The tragic thing here is that we are bringing this curse upon ourselves.

He's shown here wearing a tie that appears to be polka-dot, but its really made up of little designs.

This Was Really in a Jehovah’s Witness Publication…?
icon1 Posted by Hemant Mehta in General, Humor on November 11th, 2010

The Jehovah’s Witnesses put out a monthly magazine called Awake! which is a companion publication to the Watchtower.

In this month’s issue (PDF), the cover story on “Atheism on the March” has a very interesting beginning…

Yes, how dare those New Atheists not keep their views to themselves!?

It’s so rude when people just intrude upon you as if they have all the answers…

(The publishers really don’t see the irony in that sentence, do they?)
