I enjoy defaming Catholicism. For minutes, not hours at a time.

I live in a retirement home for war veterans. It's a state-owned place and I've had a few First Amendment battles with state employees. The Amendment won most of the battles quickly when I told those employees the First Amendment doesn't allow them to make the decisions they'd made.

One rather large battle was about the movies I was showing two nights a month on a closed circuit tv network. Happily, the administrator supported the First Amendment and when the battle reached her office she stopped it in a most delightful way: she asked me to write a movie policy and said she would sign it. I did and she did. End of battle.

The amazing part was that in this retirement home I was showing movies rated R for sexuality--movies that 17-year-olds can see without their parents. Who battled me the hardest? One of the non-veteran wives of veterans here. Yeah, she was a Catholic.

Another battle was over a Poetry and Short Prose bulletin board on which I'd posted a one-page prose piece about the many uses of the word fuck.

The state employee sent the issue to a Veterans Department attorney, who took the wind out of his sails.
