Trish, Hi! I don't envy you in that little podunk town. A big city like San Antonio isn't much different. Just more idiots. You are lucky your mom is an atheist. My husband and I have been married 33 yrs and are told that we are nothing and immoral because we "Don't love Jesus and have a personal relationship with him" One old lady tried to get us evicted by lying about us. We are alone here in Texas and prefer it that way. Having atheist web sites to chat with folks of a like mind is great. Welcome!!
I forgot to mention that I live in a small town in Missouri, Odessa. I moved to Missouri in '97 from Anchorage, Alaska (talk about a culture shock!) to be close to my mom who settled in Kansas City. Thankfully, my mom is an atheist, but it's hard to find another around here in my little podunk town. I actually keep to myself so I don't have to find myself being "that one" in town, lol. I like my anonymity. There are so many churches here and the big favorite...huge white angels on the front of many houses. Yay. I am proud of my town, however, for running out a white supremacist who was trying to open a teen club here (does the name Charles Juba ring any bells?) but they're still a bunch of hardcore Christians in many respects. Because of this, they get all up in arms about things like Pepsi (or was it Coca-Cola) putting the Pledge of Allegiance on their cans but leaving out the God part. We were founded on Christian principles, don't ya know? Ugh.
Thank goodness, I am not alone! LOL!

Our "Texas Prayer Leader", otherwise known as the governor, called for a state-wide prayer for rain. This year Texas has received only 6-inches of rain and we're in an extended drought. One result is hay prices are going through the roof and hay is being hauled in from other states. Then the bible-pounder himself is the main organizer for an unconstitutional prayer state assembly in Austin for prayers to jesse's crap for the nation.
Yet no one of any notoriety has dared to call the governor out on his clearly failed rain prayer; however, if he had performed a Comanche Rain Dance, that would also fail of course, all the media would be on his case for acting crazy.
WTF's the difference, one's as idiotic and doomed to failure as the other!
Sitting and waiting for the Mother Ship to beam me up from all this crapola seemingly centered on Texas.
Religious organizations, by their holy "charter", for lack of a more descriptive term, and I America one can suppose they have some, perhaps tenuous connection to jesse's crap are supposed to always assist the poor and hungry rather than invest by far the bulk into their edifices and impressive sanctuaries. Something about a rich man's ability of getting into heaven being analogous to a camel's inability to pass through the "eye of a needle" or words to that effect in any case.
Many times I have wished to be filthy rich so that when I see a case of a family or woman having an extremely difficult time or loosing everything to a disaster I could anonymously write a check to make them whole again; nothing would please me more than that single ability and it pains me to know there's no ef-fin possible way.
