Hi, I just joined Think Atheist last week. Been religion free for 2 years. Glad you have a group for people like me who are trapped in BFE. Religious nuts in this town make life difficult. I do all I can to endure this backwoods xtian enclave & raise my kids to have morality without religion.

Sup. everyone. I'm in North Louisiana right now but I have lived near New Orleans half my life also. I loved the south but I love to hunt more. Lots of religious folks around here but I dont have problems with them often. I have no aversion to landing a right hook and love a challenge so I guess it makes me real outspoken and confident. This leads to alot less crap than most people I hear about. They leave me alone and I return the favor mostly. lol, I'll see you everyone in the descussions!

I find that being openly atheist in the south is almost a full time job in itself. One of the first questions asked of you when you meet people is what church you belong to, if you are open; as I am, and tell people you are atheist, they see it as an open invitation to do one of the following...

1. Give you their "testimony" right there on the spot as if they are going to be the ones to change your life and save you from the clutches of hell. This process usually takes between one and three hours.

2. Tell you that this country was founded on Christianity and if you don't like it you need to move out of the country or kill yourself or better yet they will do it for you.

3. Make note of you so they can report you to their church and tell people what you do for a living and to boycott your business.

4. Continually harass you until you go to their church so God will thank them in the afterlife with more Golden Palaces to live in.

5. Once in a great while a person will ask why, listen and not judge me, and then we can become friends. These people are the exception and not the rule.

Funny story; So a friend of mine works with a preachers wife who related how at Halloween, she gives candy only after asking the children what they know about the Bible; she lamented "sometimes all they can say is 'Jesus'". I'm sure they were like "Jesus, give me the freakin' candy."

Not only do I live in the bible belt, but I believe I live in the"buckle" of said belt. Christianity has poisoned everything here.

I grew up in Louisiana, and, besides New Orleans, it's very religious. Mostly Catholic, but a lot of Southern Baptists.
