The Christian Fascists Are Growing StrongerBy Chris Hedges

Tens of millions of Americans, lumped into a diffuse and fractious movement known as the Christian right, have begun to dismantle the intellectual and scientific rigor of the Enlightenment. They are creating a theocratic state based on “biblical law,” and shutting out all those they define as the enemy. This movement, veering closer and closer to traditional fascism, seeks to force a recalcitrant world to submit before an imperial America. It champions the eradication of social deviants, beginning with homosexuals, and moving on to immigrants, secular humanists, feminists, Jews, Muslims and those they dismiss as “nominal Christians”—meaning Christians who do not embrace their perverted and heretical interpretation of the Bible. Those who defy the mass movement are condemned as posing a threat to the health and hygiene of the country and the family. All will be purged.

The followers of deviant faiths, from Judaism to Islam, must be converted or repressed. The deviant media, the deviant public schools, the deviant entertainment industry, the deviant secular humanist government and judiciary and the deviant churches will be reformed or closed. There will be a relentless promotion of Christian “values,” already under way on Christian radio and television and in Christian schools, as information and facts are replaced with overt forms of indoctrination. The march toward this terrifying dystopia has begun. It is taking place on the streets of Arizona, on cable news channels, at tea party rallies, in the Texas public schools, among militia members and within a Republican Party that is being hijacked by this lunatic fringe.

I would like to know if this could really be happening. It would not surprise me considering how many Americans have suffered brain poisoning from Religion. I have a feeling that the Liberty University might be involved in this. It has been flooding the White House administration with it's graduates. Also Texas IS Christianity with Geo. Dubya as its "pope" .

America would get a name change to the United CHRISTIAN States of America.

Hi Robert. You've brought up a great point. But I think there are too many religions in the United States to let that happen. Each one has it's own stake in the American dollar. There's big money in religion. And, money is the reason atheism will never win the religious war in America. I have a baptist minister friend that say's each baptist church is it's own entity. He said, "you couldn't find five baptist ministers to agree on anything". Also, I remember a t-shirt I saw years ago, "Iran-One nation under one god". I don't think America will ever be "One nation under one god".
It is happening. Despite all the other viewpoints (this Christian Fascism movement is actually a minority), they are taking over.

To say they're not a threat is to VASTLY underestimate the lengths these people will go to. Just because they are in the minority does not mean they can't get control of the government. If they work State-by-State, they can do it that way, and even California would eventually fold to them, or be the only secular oasis left in the US, consistently under siege.

And, as the article so rightly points out, it's not a fight only for atheists, and we need to be cognizant of that. One part of why they have so much power is because some of our famous atheists have the uncanny ability to alienate the moderately/liberally religious, and with such alienation, they will let it happen, because they don't want to fight alongside such atheists. It also doesn't help that even amongst the liberal wings, Jews, Christians, and Muslims are constantly at odds with not just each other, but with Pagans, Wiccans, Deists, Pan(en)theists, animists, and so on. Even internally, because of the different sects, there's strife.

And to claim that there's no in-fighting amongst atheists is just stupid. You have the atheists who are basically theist-friendly, then you have the anti-theists. Debates about "how to treat theists" are raging.

The Christian Fascists use these facts to their advantage.

I really and truly fear a fanatical Christian takeover of the US, and I'm quite sure I will not only be alive, but still young when it happens (I'm 23 right now). "Too late" is a LOT closer than we think, so we need to act now before "too late" comes upon us...
Just as I thought. Thanks for that valuable information. I am fortunate that I live in Australia where the people refuse to be pushed around by idoits like fundamentalists of any kind. Average regular Sunday Church attendance here is about 9%. The Global Atheist Convention held in Melbourne last March where Richard Dawkins was the main speaker scared shit out of the Church leaders. The Roman Catholic and Anglican Archbishops of Sydney at Easter in their sermons damned Atheists to the fires of Hell. Just as well there is no Hell.

Roman Catholic Cardinal Archbishop of Sydney George "Go To Hell" Pell had a debate at a University with Dan Dennett. Dennett did him like a dinner and Pell refused to be photographed with him for the Press.

So Nathan, Australia is a better place to live than the UCSA. I was there in 1968 and drove from Detroit to Florida, across the Confederate States to San Francisco, about 8,000 miles. I found the best place was the airport on the way out. (Oh, I did love the Kennedy Space Center)
