Hi,

There's a potential need for a pro bono attorney to defend the Minnesota Independent, an online nonprofit newspaper, from a lawsuit filed by an extremist fundamentalist.  Please read the story here:

The fundie in question is Bradlee Dean, a notorious anti-gay activist in the state of MN, and a fiery far right radio talk show host.  You can read more about this character here:

The MN Independent has a solid reputation for exposing religious right shenanigans in the state, and now it's being threatened with a large lawsuit for doing so.  I'm not fully apprised as to the organization's current legal counsel needs or budget. But the MN Independent might very well be in need of pro bono work, being a nonprofit.  Is there anyone on this list who might be interested in this case or know someone who would?

Hello, does any one have a recomendation on getting a source for practicing attorneys who are atheist in the Chicago land area, out side of the ACLU route???

Looking for fun in '10? How about suing your local government body that uses official Christian prayers?

Tips:

Look at your *state* constitution. It may have a stronger Establishment Clause than the federal Constitution. Or it may not have been tested yet and is still subject to a broad interpretation.

Don't believe the defense that Marsh v. Chambers authorizes *all* government prayer. It's a fact-specific, limited holding that's hard to apply in real life (what's a nonsectarian prayer?), as explained in the dissent.

Ask the local ACLU for help.

Include clergy members as plaintiffs.

Good luck! You might not only have fun, but may also earn some attorney's fees.

I predict failure for this group. There is no national association of secular lawyers. There are Catholic attourneys, 7 day adventist lawyers but no Atheist lawyers "out there" since Clarence Darrow. I named my daughter after him. Maybe Darrow will take up civil rights litigation and trial practice? She's 15 and an artist exploring engineering right now. Straight A student busy in a nice college town baby sitting her disabled mom. On a shoestring budget as my child support is not much but all I have, over half my paycheck. There is no explicit protection for Atheist in the US or 50 state, WDC or territorial law to even validate a tort for harm from religious motivated injuries. Religion vs religion sure, but no Atheist is protected from the religious, In god We Trust, so help you gawd and One Nation Under the defacto theocracy gawd save this honorable US Sup Ct oh yea oh yea...... not much money in civil rights work, Fay Clayton turned me down as a plaintiff and defendant here in Charleston, SC, who the hell else has won a F.A.C.E. and R.I.C.O case?
