Is rational thinking a handicap for an artist ?

Back in college when I was studying design, my professor commented that I had thinking process of an engineer, that I needed to loosen up.

Well, the works of MC Escher come immediately to mind.  I would hazard a guess that he had a thinking process that involved a lot of engineering, math and rationality.........just add your creativity to your thinking process and see what you get. Oh, and have fun with it!!

We loved Eschers work back in school. But don't you think he was an odd exception to the rule?
