should the elderly be assisted in ending their lives?

Absolutely,  I would want the same for myself when I get to the point my body has worn out but has not yet died.  I saw my father ask to be let go while he still had some dignity, but was ignored by the doctors and forced to suffer for months.  It was just cruel for both him and his family.  We just have to get past these religious dogmas about death and provide a peaceful, painless, end for those who wish to die.
If they are of sound mind, and if they are suffering, and if they choose it freely, then yes. Society should not infringe upon individual autonomy in such personal matters.
