Yeah, Phil's "Bad Astronomy" originally referred to astrologers and dolts who used astronomy to back up their 2012 apocalypse or ~whatever~.

Greg and Nelson - thanks guys :) That Meta horoscope thing is awesome - and I didn't realise Phil Plait had done Astrology debunking - thanks :)

Check out Phil Plait's old blog, "Bad Astronomy".  I think there's a link to it on his current Discovery Channel blog.

I'm writing an article of sorts about Astrology (and why it's bollocks) for my blog - anyone got any good links on the history or links to research?

Carol Tavris on Everybody Making Mistakes, Except Us...

Guest, Carol Tavris discusses her book (co-authored with Elliot Aronson) "Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts." In it they describe how our powerful cognitive dissonance engine of self-justification gives us the incredible ability to rationalize events and beliefs so that we always end up being better than average at being right. Also, how we are forced into these rationalizations by our absolute need to somehow square our most dearly held opinions of ourselves with the nasty tendency of some facts to contradict them.

Carol Tavris is a social psychologist who has tought at UCLA. She has written for many publications, including the NY Times and the LA Times. She is the author of a number of books, including "The Mismeasure of Women" and the recently re-released, "Psychobabble and Biobunk."

Richard Saunders and his Skeptic Zone crew have been going after Power Bands for some time now. I've never seen them, so I thought they were an Australian thing until he mentioned buying a bunch when he came to Atlanta for DragonCon. It's obvious that anyone selling Power Bands has to know that it is a fraud because of the way they demonstrate the effect. Why aren't the state attorneys general going after these guys?

@ Fred. The comment about contrarianism and conspiracy theories was NOT aimed at you; it was a general point.

It doesn't surprise me that you can not find sources before those you quote. If you look at the Oxford English Dictionary (the big version) you will find that many words in common use have their first documented citations long after it is known they were in use. It is one thing to use it, another to find documentary evidence. Furthermore, if you go into the meaning of words, you will find that many meant totally different things in the past, and even opposite things, but that does not make their current usage invalid.

Like I said, post this as a discussion, if you wish to continue it, instead of cluttering the comments section.
