12 February 1809 is very remarkable in that two brilliant men, perhaps
the two most important men of the 19th-century were born on that day.
Both men were ahead of their time.
The first, as you know, was Charles Darwin born in England. The second was Abraham Lincoln, born in Kentucky.
Lincoln became a great skeptic during his life. During the Civil War,
he attended church only to assuage his wife's pain over the death of
their son. By then, he had become a Deist. Professional historians consistently rate him as the greatest president to have ever led the United States.
Lincoln was an extraordinary
reader. I wish Lincoln had survived to read Darwin's Origin of Species.
He would have recognized its value at once.
