I enjoy the Christmas traditions of wreath and tree, holly and mistletoe, roaring fires, presents, good food, that ghost story by Charles Dickens, classic movies and shows, and of course the many songs.
But as an atheist, I find the religious references in a song like "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem" rather grating. I prefer a rendition of "White Christmas" which contains nothing religious at all, except for the name Christmas itself, which is becoming increasingly secular.
As part of my annual war on Christmas-- my effort to eradicate religion from ancient winter solstice traditions which are today known as Christmas-- I'd like to put together a comprehensive list of secular Christmas songs. Which ones do you know? Post them here, ideally as playable video or audio tracks.
Posting a song with references to just Christmas itself is fine (such as "White Christmas"), and so are songs about winter that contain no mention of Christmas or holidays (such as "Winter Wonderland"). But if you post a song with any references to Jesus or religion, you'll get a lump of coal in your stocking. And you don't want one of those because; what a dirty fossil fuel!
Please post the song and artist at the top. It's okay to add the same song to this list more than once, provided you're listing a rendition by another artist.
White Christmas - The Drifters
A Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives
Silver Bells - Johnny Mathis
It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year - Andy Williams
Woody Allen Jesus - Tim Minchin
Grandma got run over by a reindeer.
I'd say Time Minchin's "White Wine in the Sun" and "Let it Snow" (even though that one is not really a christmas song, it always gets dragged out for the season
Rarely will you hear anything this funny.
The one by Alvin and the Chipmunks. Cant remember the title
Linus and Lucy - Vince Guaraldi
