I've no doubt your decision to volunteer is greatly appreciated!

What if the teachers accidently shoot some kids or staff in the crossfire?   Is that just the risk you have to take?

Of course. "Friendly fire." If a police officer had stumbled on the shooter and accidentally shot a kid before killing the shooter but cut the body count from 20 to 5 (including the one the cop shot), the math works. It's a worthwhile trade off, no?

It has been claimed that police are far more likely to do this sort of accidental collateral damage than are non-police citizens with a concealed carry permit in similar situations.  In other words the "professionals" are worse shots than the amateur who jumped through the (relatively minor) hoops to get a permit..

At the same time, a lot of amateur gun owners may go to the practice range several times a year whereas a police officer may only go as often as required. Perhaps once per year.

Don't you ever run down? You're like the freakin' Energizer Bunny, you just keep going, and going, and going, and going, and...

Hahaha.

I love the "What if..." it's so informative.

But let's give it a shot...

The answer to your question will depend upon shot placement and of course bullet choice, did you wish to give us this information?

The risk part of your question is also difficult to assess, who's risk? The teacher's?  The kid/kids?  The staff? The person or persons the teacher is shooting at?  Your own personal risk?  My own personal risk?  Someones metaphorical risk?

Or was this just another in a long line of vitriolic questions?

AssessmentRisk assessment - Risk assessment is a step in a risk management procedure.

I'm afraid that however the gun situation is handled from here out we chance people losing more rights or giving them away freely. I have a hard time trusting our government to not make a "war on Mental Health" or a "War on Guns" as there was a "War on Crime", a "War on Drugs" and a "War on Terror" all of which american citizens gave up or lost rights.

I work in a liquor store and they are notorious for getting robbed. About half of my co-workers carry a gun either concealed or open. I might be glad for that one day or I might catch one of their strays. Hopefully it's not like the shoot out scene in "From Dusk Til Dawn".

I guess what I'm saying is that I trust me with a gun and thats about it. No telling if a teacher might snap or not be responsible or if a someone might take it from them or if they would just shit themselves and not use it. There are no promises.

If in the right hands sure it might cut down on casualties but if not it could make things worse. So I wouldn't suggested teachers armed or even anyone special be paid to be there but maybe if the national guard (I don't know if thats a stupid suggestion or not) volunteered to roam the hallways accompanied by an alarm in every classroom that can pinpoint exactly where the perp. is then maybe?

If I don't sound solid on that it's cause I'm not. There is no easy answer here. If there is I doubt any of us will be the ones to come up with it.

Sometimes we look at our rights and say "Yeah, actually... that's kind of a stupid right." Maybe our right to own slaves or treat women as inferiors wasn't specifically stated in a constitution. But at one point, we had it. And then we were like "Ehhhhh..."

Now for all you folks saying that we need to catch these people before they snap, how exactly would that work?

Let's round up all the goths and put them into a concentration camp until we can reprogram them. Ditto for all the schizos and bipolars, right?

I know that's not what you want, but what you want could easily become a witch hunt.

"the War on Mental Health".
