Why Should I
When I'm arguing with a theist, I always find myself being.... well not myself. I feel I have to try to break all the stereotypes of atheism and not give it a bad name. Like I am a representative of atheism, and i can't say what i really want to say. Without fear of the repercussions of what the people will think, of atheism in general. So why should I, fell obliged to try to disprove the misconceptions about atheism, when it intervenes with who I am? Now you could say I am "being selfish" but I could say the same about anybody that wants me to disprove all the misconceptions about atheism. Since they are thinking about themselves or the atheism community, and the way society will treat them, if there are still stigmas about atheism.
So lets hear it, why should i be nice to the religious when the only reason I'm doing it is to disprove the misconceptions of atheism? Why can't I tell them to STFU, without fear of the repercussions, that the atheism community will face?

i understand, you've said as much already. we're going in circles now so i'll say again that you're welcome to tell people to STFU if you want of course but if you're aim is deconversion you're shooting yourself in the foot and if you're aim is to represent atheism as a minority then you're only confirming the negative stereotype the people you're engaging already have of us. either way, why bother? you're just expending the energy to piss yourself off and fail in your goal, whichever goal it is.
you seem to be concerned about what others think about atheists as a group. you need to decide if you care enough about the group to hold back the STFU type insults or not-- and i say that with no value judgment should you decide the answer is "not".
to conclude: you don't have to but you need to decide if you care enough to; but don't do it because you think you have to, as if you're being forced to. if you decide to then it's only because you yourself think it's the right thing to do on behalf of all atheists, not because you were forced to. -

The same reason you are not rude and hostile to people you disagree with on less controversial issues. I have found that I am more honest and moral being an atheist, not because I am an atheist, but because I realize that I am responsible for my actions. Plus, I am a primate and I want people to like me. Not only that, but when people like me, they are more likely to respect me and my ideas.

reg man, we all want to be loved man, its a social thing. we and forrest should remember that when we disagree with otjhers on a host of different subjects that both parties are arguing points based on opinion based on facts and evidence man, not dogma and fairy stories.
people also like and respect us to voice our opinnion with passion, well i do . fuck this.

Never use that word as I do not think it means anything only a word when a person cannot know of any words to explain what they mean without referring to it.
I tell everyone that I am proud to be an Atheist give them my reasons logically and then say goodbye before I get any abuse, to which I will not give any credence to, By talking to someone you can always know whether they would ever change their mind that has been brainwashed. I told someone I know that if I could not prove there was no god then how could they prove there was;; of course the standard reply was 'well I just know there is'. Bye-bye is my reply...

I disagree... its when we don't seriously consider repercussions that we often fuck ourselves.
You can stand up and be true to yourself and your ideals without resorting to STFU.. and if you can't then you aren't thinking creative enough.
You have to think about what the goal is... If its to beat your opponents into hamburger meat then by all means.... Tell them to shut the fuck up and pull the guns out and have at it.... but if the goal is the 'possibility' of reaching one or two people each time you have a discussion (even if they are just bystanders) then you better think about the repercussions of your thoughts words and deeds.
In a professional fight with two trained fighters of equal ability.... a significant percentage of wins will be by the one who was able to keep their wits about them and didn't let emotion overtake common sense.
Be passionate about the goal and doing whatever it takes to attain it. Guts alone won't win a ballgame. Having a game-plan and a goal to direct your passion towards does.
How often do we see someone make a great play in a ball game....and have it go for naught because someone else lost their temper and made some completely avoidable personal foul penalty? It often means the difference between winning and losing.
On good teams.... everyone works together....and you'll see players keep each other in line to avoid the big penalties or mistakes.
This is the point... don't let the discussion get turned or derailed or focused on the personal fouls......cause when you do that you lose... They can then turn away from and not even address the strong points of your argument but focus instead on the personal attack which derails the entire discussion.

STFU should be judiciously parceled out if at all in any kind of debate.... not just non-theist vs theist. If the point is an atheism vs theism debate you want to keep it on the general points and don't make it personal. If the point is to get them to leave you alone.. then STFU is pretty good. But STFU is personal and takes the argument to that level. If they tell you that YOU PERSONALLY are going to hell...then you can tell them to STFU!

He said "the reason that i did not believe was because i wanted to do what ever i wanted to" I had proven i knew more about his beliefs than he did, and after a week of harassment from him. I took that as an personal attack, for 1) he knows nothing about me, 2) I had shown reason why i did not believe in the Abraham god. So i told him "fuck you and your god".
