Many of you may have noticed that I am always referring to my state (SC) in discussions. I have realized that I don't see many positive things living where I do and everything I have to say is some-what negative. It isn't intentional, it's just how things are. I feel as if we are decades behind everyone else. Honestly, I am jealous of you all that are able to find other atheists near you. Some people have told me that no one around them even cares if they are atheist or not. In SC, it is a HUGE deal. *Sigh* It must be nice to be accepted :)

I am wondering where you all are from and how your area reacts to freethinkers, etc., and where you think are the best places to live.

Live in the Northern Virginia part of the Greater Metropolitan Washington, DC area.  Pretty diverse religiously.   I don't really talk about religion that much and, in turn, most people who are religious don't get in your face.   But I do think that the further away you get from the metro area you will find the big mega-churches.  But even so most people know to not make a big deal of religion around here.

I found another discussion on here with this same topic. I posted some photos of where I live on there b/c they were all sharing photos, so I thought I would share them here too :)

Pretty! Pretty! Pretty! Makes me want to get the dogs and have a pick-nik lol.
LoL! I love the weather here, especially lately. Yesterday it was 68 degrees, tomorrow its supposed to be 70. It isn't HOT yet, but summertime is on the way! I'm not happy until it's at least in the mid 80s. I like SC because we have mountains and we have the ocean. A lot of states aren't so lucky.

O I forgot, you are in GA. You get the nice weather too!

Wow it is gorgeous there! Your son is so cute! He loves the doggy!

More waterfalls. There are some beautiful ones here.

I doubt I will be moving, although I wish I could. I love my parents too much and I have a life here. It would be hard to leave it all behind.  I want so badly to visit NYC though. I will try to check into broadcast :) O, and sorry about the pics. I didn't even think of that when I was posting them.
I was born and raised in San Diego. San Diego and California in general seems to let people be who they want to be. I also lived and went to college in Washington State. I lived in Portland Or and Seattle. While both friendly to people of different beliefs smaller towns outside of Portland are very religious. Seattle was very open and inviting. I recently got stationed in Va. And I must say I feel like I must live in the bible belt. I have seen more god license plates in the last 4 months than I have my entire life. Also people seem to be very vocal about god and don't seem to respect others thoughts. I could be wrong having only been here for a few months but this is what I have seen.
I wish I could convinced everyone here (TA), to move to Costa Rica.  It's closer than you think especially if you're from the east coast (2 and a half hour flight to Miami).  It is VERY Christian here, BUT many of 'them' thirst for knowledge and are open minded.  It is almost impossible to find books translated into spanish that we'd recommend, but most of the educated speak decent english and it is 'getting better'.  Most of my wife's immediate family has 'been converted' to be a free-thinker! From our own insight and the translation of insight written/said in english.  I 'study' human behavior and see the child-parent relationship going on with many here; if you're from an english speaking country and are here because you want to be and not because you need to be, you are granted respect without the need to earn it first.  Explaining the open-mindedness.  As far as living conditions... Let's see, 30 minutes to the beach, 20 minutes to the capital, 10 minutes from the airport.  The malls for the most part are just like in the 'States'.  'Department' stores are small.  Outback, Tony Romas, Hooters, KFC, Subway...  National Geographic named this area as the best in the world a few years ago.  Much of the best coffee in the world is grow within minutes.  Okay, enough of my sells pitch.

I would love to visit Costa Rica. It is actually one of the top places that I want to visit and I plan on doing it within the next year or so. Who knows, maybe I will fall in love with it to the point that I want to stay. My husband was offered a job there a couple of years ago and he declined. I wish we would've at least visited it and considered it.

Well, I recommend it.  The hardest part is moving 'far' from friends, but for you it is closer than California. :)  No visa required... just a passport (at least to visit) is needed until you get residency (which would be soon with a job here).
