Many of you may have noticed that I am always referring to my state (SC) in discussions. I have realized that I don't see many positive things living where I do and everything I have to say is some-what negative. It isn't intentional, it's just how things are. I feel as if we are decades behind everyone else. Honestly, I am jealous of you all that are able to find other atheists near you. Some people have told me that no one around them even cares if they are atheist or not. In SC, it is a HUGE deal. *Sigh* It must be nice to be accepted :)

I am wondering where you all are from and how your area reacts to freethinkers, etc., and where you think are the best places to live.

Well i live in Sonora, Mexico and over here its kind of weird when you say you are an atheist people might tell you that you are trying to show off? i have never understood how thats showing off, or they just dont take it seriously like maybe they think oyu are a little confuced, i dont really care what they think tho. Right now i only have two atheist friends, i have like three who like drugs and do things like meditation wich i used to do, like trying to reach your higher self. Im attending to a catholic school and sometimes i do get mad at how stupid religion has some people but i guess theres no helping for some, i go to this school becauseits education is good, i do like it but its not perfect, when i was in nineth grade i was in a church ceremony at school since we are not allowed to get out and someone who was sitting next to me asked me what religion i was and i said that i was an atheist and everyone was like what!? but those kind of things happen when people are ignorant and live in a little bubble like world.
U Live in NYC?!? why haven't u told me? What atheist group are you involved in
You should come and see where I live !!!! Morocco , which means that everyone is muslim and you are not expected to be anything else than a muslim. What's worse is that you can even go to jail if you announce your atheism here. For people here , I am just another good muslim . I fake it which is both bad and funny !!!
the other day some friends were going to the mosque and asked me to join them ; I don't know what happened to me because I always have some excuse . I just ran out of excuses and decided to go the mosque .In the the middles of the prayer I had an urge to laugh loud , I couldn't stop it ....the preacher was reading some funny verses, I was going to pee i my pants!!
fortunately I was standing in the last line and managed to mix that laugh with coughs , contineous coughs
this is the only place where I can say what I want without being afraid of others' reactions .
This site rocks and I don't know what would have happened to me without the internet. Maybe I was going to develop some strange abilities ... talking to mirrors or walls as an example
jajaja last week we had a church session or whatever you call it in my school and the laughter hit me too, it was in a big place with alot of people and some were talking so they didnt mind.

I live in Ireland. It has changed so much recently. From being 99% catholic and under the control of the church in nearly all aspects of life it is now so changed that it would be almost unrecognisable to someone who had been away and returned after say 20 years. Galway for example is very multicultural with about 85 different nationalities living there. Bing an Atheist is not an issue. Most people do not care what you do or don’t believe as long as you stay of the soapbox. There is some racism but things are getting better – duplicates of bigots anywhere else in the world. Gay people can live and work openly because again people just could not be bothered getting worked up about it.

I am delighted to say that no undeserved respect is given to the churches anymore. There are some fundie sects like Baptists and born again from Africa and the USA but they are not taken seriously. I even eat in the Mosque when passing. The curries are sooooo good. It has a proper “live and let live attitude” somewhere between a laid back Amsterdam waiting for Mardi Gras at the weekend. My friend from Ohio has just moved there and she loves it.

Texas. It's not a great place for the irreligious. Especially considering I go to school at A&M, one of the most religious public universities in the nation. Right now I'm an intern at the capital in Austin, and that's actually been alot better, because Austin is very open to different ideas. Even though when I'm actually at the capital I'm surrounded by bible beaters, everywhere else in the city is fine.

If you're going to come to Texas, I'd suggest staying in Austin if you intend to be outspoken about your lack of faith. Otherwise be prepared to take alot of harassment.

As we frequently say in Texas, thank god for Mississippi.
I live in the Tampa metro area. It's very much like where you live. There are some small groups that are free thinkers but the majority of people around me and at work are believers. If it should come up in conversation I will simply say that I don't believe in a god. I avoid any sort of debate by saying they are entitled to their opinion as I am entitled to mine.
Come to Canada, it is not built around religion, and no one blesses you(curses) in the name of God during election races
I live in the northern part of BC, Canada. It's a beautiful place up here, we have gay marraige, and people usually care little about other's religion. However, like every other place in the world, there is the odd asshole, and I find that I hear homophobic insults used way too much. But, I find that the pros outweigh the cons, if I were to leave, I'm afraid I would end up in some place much, much, worse. I'm quite happy here, and most people I know are too.
I am in Concord N.C. outside of Charlotte. I've had the opportunity to attend some cultural events in the city of Charlotte and it has shown itself to be quite diverse. As you move east or west of the I-85 /I-77 corridor it gets dim awfully fast. The city is like an island that is spreading it's tentacles of influence outward. Even Concord is showing some signs of improvement due to a large medical campus there.
