Many of you may have noticed that I am always referring to my state (SC) in discussions. I have realized that I don't see many positive things living where I do and everything I have to say is some-what negative. It isn't intentional, it's just how things are. I feel as if we are decades behind everyone else. Honestly, I am jealous of you all that are able to find other atheists near you. Some people have told me that no one around them even cares if they are atheist or not. In SC, it is a HUGE deal. *Sigh* It must be nice to be accepted :)
I am wondering where you all are from and how your area reacts to freethinkers, etc., and where you think are the best places to live.

Permalink Reply by Sergio Lopez on February 17, 2011 at 4:45pm I live in Ireland. It has changed so much recently. From being 99% catholic and under the control of the church in nearly all aspects of life it is now so changed that it would be almost unrecognisable to someone who had been away and returned after say 20 years. Galway for example is very multicultural with about 85 different nationalities living there. Bing an Atheist is not an issue. Most people do not care what you do or don’t believe as long as you stay of the soapbox. There is some racism but things are getting better – duplicates of bigots anywhere else in the world. Gay people can live and work openly because again people just could not be bothered getting worked up about it.
I am delighted to say that no undeserved respect is given to the churches anymore. There are some fundie sects like Baptists and born again from Africa and the USA but they are not taken seriously. I even eat in the Mosque when passing. The curries are sooooo good. It has a proper “live and let live attitude” somewhere between a laid back Amsterdam waiting for Mardi Gras at the weekend. My friend from Ohio has just moved there and she loves it.
Permalink Reply by Mason on February 17, 2011 at 4:20pm Texas. It's not a great place for the irreligious. Especially considering I go to school at A&M, one of the most religious public universities in the nation. Right now I'm an intern at the capital in Austin, and that's actually been alot better, because Austin is very open to different ideas. Even though when I'm actually at the capital I'm surrounded by bible beaters, everywhere else in the city is fine.
If you're going to come to Texas, I'd suggest staying in Austin if you intend to be outspoken about your lack of faith. Otherwise be prepared to take alot of harassment.
