We've all heard that people that listen to Mozart and similar music are smarter than those that listen to other music. I know this has a lot to do with stereotyping, but I wonder if there is any truth behind it.

As atheists, we are very educated individuals, so I know that by polling you all, I might could get an idea of whether or not there is any correlation between music and intellectual capacity or music and freethought. Perhaps atheists tend to listen to one particular type of music.

Personally, my first choice is rap, followed by classic rock. I know that is an odd combination, but that is the two types of stations that I always tune in to.

What is your choice of music? If you have more than one, you can list them in the order that you like best. Can't wait to see your answers!

So far, the majority agrees on metal/rock. Though some people here like country, or at least like a few country songs, it seems to be the genre that is least favored :) And even for the ones that do like country, most only name classic country artists. VERY INTERESTING!

Perhaps I'm the only one, but I love downtempo music.

Depends on who's using the program but, generally speaking, yes!

I mainly listen to Hip-Hop, but I also listen to anything that makes you think and has a message, preferably positive.

Please share - all I know of Afrobeat is from having seen Fela last fall....grrreat music....

Electronic music no bullshit just plain music good vibes very uplifting!

I love classic rock & country, bluegrass, any kind of instrumental as long as it isn't heavy, and some classical.

I grew up with country and when I think what a militant atheist I am, I have to say, the only thing religious about me is the spiritual stuff I hear in country music.  Kind of a weird blend.  But, that just goes to show you how memes work!  You're brainwashed with something from the time you're a kid.  I couldn't understand how people could believe in the skyfairy, but I enjoyed country and western even if it had some mention of God or Lord in it.

Go figure!

Well....I am a total atheist but I love gospel music!!

My main preference is metal but I do like a wide variety. My taste from youth hasn't changed it just expanded as I get older.

Anything that has a kick ass guitar will get my attention. All pends on my mood really. For mellow I can chill to some Pink Floyd, Rush and Kansas. In a party mode I throw on some AC/DC and Nickelback . When I want to get my heart and brain to pumping I'll throw on some Godsmack, Disturbed, Metallica, Iron Maiden...well you get the idea :)

Indie, country and pop

All time favorite #1 band - Queen  (thank you Susan for the tickets to the Montreal concert, Nov '81.  I won't say thats what induced me to marry her, but...)

Nowadays,  my listening patterns are predicated by what I am doing at the time.  Around the house - classic rock.  Reading - baroque.  Woodturning - Cynthia Withoff for the rough work, Mozart for the finishing cuts.  Other workshop activities - anything I glean off the net that strikes my fancy (Dream Theater, Stratovarius, et al)

Having a daughter who went into education as a music teacher really exposes you to artists and bands you wouldn't find on your own (check out the Mellotones, Thursday nights at the Seahorse Tavern, Halifax)

I unashamedly favour nuMetal, I intensely dislike rap though metal-rap isn't so bad (depends on the band).

Favourite bands are Bullet, Linkin Park, Godsmack, Spineshank, Evanescence, Nightwish, Delain, Funeral For A Friend, Hoobastank ... but I still like 80's stuff including quite a lot of old dance music & Jazz Funk.
