We've all heard that people that listen to Mozart and similar music are smarter than those that listen to other music. I know this has a lot to do with stereotyping, but I wonder if there is any truth behind it.

As atheists, we are very educated individuals, so I know that by polling you all, I might could get an idea of whether or not there is any correlation between music and intellectual capacity or music and freethought. Perhaps atheists tend to listen to one particular type of music.

Personally, my first choice is rap, followed by classic rock. I know that is an odd combination, but that is the two types of stations that I always tune in to.

What is your choice of music? If you have more than one, you can list them in the order that you like best. Can't wait to see your answers!

I saw Portugal The Man in an Alaskan bar about 3 years ago. Good show.

I'll just point out some of the bands I listen to, and if you can recognise them, good, if not, I'm not going to explain:

Unique style: Magma (France), Xing Sa (France?), Nicolas Lens (Belgium), Beirut, Ash Ra Tempel (Germany), Buckethead

Experimental: The Maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot, Ephel Duat (Italy)

Technical metal: Atheist, Spiral Arhitect (Norway), Death (latter albums like symbolic), Gordian Knot, At War with self

Post rock: Godspeed you black emperor (Canada), Mogwai, Cloudkicker, Mono (japan), Pirat ship quintet (?) and so on

Neoprog: Marillion, Porcupine tree, Blackfield (Israel), Darwin's Radio, Everon (Germany), Riverside (Poland), The Flower kings (Sweden), Bacamarte (Brasil),  Mew (Denmark)

I'm very multicultural with my bands :) (if i didn't write the country it's probably GB or USA)

But I do listen to (let's say) normal music like:

Elp, Rush, Yes, Camel, Supertramp

Peter Gabriel, Andy McKee, Kieth Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, Allan Holdsworth

Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Regina Spektor

The Mars Volta, Muse, Beatles... did I finally get to something you all know ;)?

To much information?

I did listen to the Nile, but never got used to it :(

At War With Self is made by the guitarist from Gordian Knot, so if you liked gordian you will love At War With Self :)

Atheist is cool, samba jazz technical metal, can't get better than that. Didn't like the new Jupiter album though.

I didn't listen to Nile's new album, but nothing is stopping me, is there :D
I listen almost exclusively to Metal!

A lot of from all parts of Europe (Lacuna Coil, In Flames, Nightwish), contemporary American metal, death metal, power metal, symphonic metal, etc...

But I'm not a purist, so include New Metal in that list (Disturbed, Korn).

If I had to define my music style in terms of one band though, it'd have to be TOOL.
 I love Tool!
me too!

You and I have very similar tastes - plus you're the ONLY other person who listed Lacuna Coil!! I love them, and Christina Scabbia is HOT. I really like "Our Truth".

And I also like Tool, and Maynard's side project, A Perfect Circle. "Judith" is a fantastic "atheist" song.

My definite first choice is Hip Hop/Rap, with R&B second and Rock a close third. I usually dabble in Classical music, but only when I'm studying.

Ha, as cliche as it is, I do actually listen to Mozart. Beethoven is good, but JS Bach is my favorite. I make the joke that if the "artist" (composer) hasn't been dead for more than 200 years, I don't know who they are, and I don't care.

I do listen to Plain White T's, and Pink. Enter the Haggis is awesome too.

grunge, definitely. anything 90's i love. classic rock, and basically any other type of rock/metal is awesome too. i also love country and classical. go figure, huh?
Very eclectic.  I'm generally most into postpunk, but my playlist contains everything from Joy Division to Hazel Dickens, to Delirium, to Johnny Cash, to John Coltrane, to Abba to, Josh White, to Wumpscut, to Voltaire, to Murder By Death, to Jason Ricci and New Blood, to Arcade Fire, to the White Stripes,  to Nick Cave, to Tom Waits Stevie Ray Vaughn to Qntal, to.... you get the idea.  Eclectic and a little dark, I suppose.
