We've all heard that people that listen to Mozart and similar music are smarter than those that listen to other music. I know this has a lot to do with stereotyping, but I wonder if there is any truth behind it.

As atheists, we are very educated individuals, so I know that by polling you all, I might could get an idea of whether or not there is any correlation between music and intellectual capacity or music and freethought. Perhaps atheists tend to listen to one particular type of music.

Personally, my first choice is rap, followed by classic rock. I know that is an odd combination, but that is the two types of stations that I always tune in to.

What is your choice of music? If you have more than one, you can list them in the order that you like best. Can't wait to see your answers!

I can handle most music except new country. I like the older stuff and some crazy stuff like werewolf by cocorosie, and the maid that sold her barley by deanta. Go figure. Mostly I listen to 80's rock but I switch up a lot.

I'm an R&B girl at heart because it's what I listened to growing up.

I can listen to just about any genre. Maybe not every SONG of that genre but there's something.

I LOVE to sing and I sing quite well. I confess, I still sing some gospel songs from when I went to church as a kid. I don't really connect with the words, I just like the way the song goes. ::shoulder shrug::

As I'm typing this, I'm listening to screamo.
I'm not a huge fan of rap. I don't actively seek it out but if I'm out in the club or in my car and a fairly decent rap song comes on, I'll listen to it. I have some rap on my iPod but it's "mainstream" rap.

I go through music moods.
One month I'm majority r&B. One month I listened to the classical station.

Bluegrass isn't something I seek out either, though I do like pretty much all of the songs on the "O Brother Where Art Thou" sound track. I do have to say that I don't mind older stuff like Hank Williams or Johnny Cash. I know all of the classic country by heart but that is probably because of being raised around it, not because I listened by choice. I mainly sing Loretta Lynn on karaoke and everyone thinks I sound just like her. I don't ever listen to her music, though. I just remember all of her songs from when I was a kid. It is sad that I have that much of a southern accent. I really should start trying to correct it. I guess when I was thinking of country, I was thinking of the new stuff that is played over and over and over. At the end of the 70s, country turned to crap. I hate stuff like Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, and Toby Keith.

Punk (mostly bands from the 70's and early 80's,) Rock, Rockabilly (Social Distortion and The Horrorpops for example) and Metal, mostly. However, I will give almost anything a chance except Christian Rock and Country.

I love a wide variety of music and styles, my favs are industrial, indie-rock, and punk, but I can never get enough of blues, especially funk-blues.
electro house / french electro, glitch hop, electro, breakbeats, balkan beat, dubstep, swing house, techno, EBM, industrial

Or maybe I should just link to my Last.fm profile, which reveals I also listen to classical and jazz...

Explore Soundcloud.com.  It's also good for finding DJ mixes...

I don't know the names of a lot of techno and trance artists because I usually listen to it in clubs--if you search you can find these places in the US.  Sometimes it's on weekdays though since they often try to please the mainstream Top 40 + rap crowd on weekends.

BTW, I'm not much of a trance person but I like the band Psylab because they do it live with an actual drummer (maybe he's a robot?): http://soundcloud.com/psylab

jazz, metal-core, trash metal, alt rock, classi, prog. rock

I like everything except Country Music. My favorite band is City and Colour. If I had to choose a single favorite musician, it would be John Legend. I also like early 20th century blues, like Skip James.

When it comes to Classical music, I do like some of it. For some reason, I seem to like it more when it is the background music to a movie or a video.

I listen to pretty much anything except country, but my favourite type of music is metal, and all of it's subgenres. I play piano, saxaphone and bass guitar, and also write a lot of music as well (mostly metal of course).
