We've all heard that people that listen to Mozart and similar music are smarter than those that listen to other music. I know this has a lot to do with stereotyping, but I wonder if there is any truth behind it.

As atheists, we are very educated individuals, so I know that by polling you all, I might could get an idea of whether or not there is any correlation between music and intellectual capacity or music and freethought. Perhaps atheists tend to listen to one particular type of music.

Personally, my first choice is rap, followed by classic rock. I know that is an odd combination, but that is the two types of stations that I always tune in to.

What is your choice of music? If you have more than one, you can list them in the order that you like best. Can't wait to see your answers!

i love all kinds of music, i grew up playing the drums and have now been playing guitar for about 7 years,  i can name particular artists/bands from each genre that i dig

metal-(meshuggah, dream theater, between the buried and me, opeth, periphery, sikth & much more)

rap/hip-hop-(bone thugs, tech n9ne, erik b & rakim, immortal technique, redman & methodman)

jazz-(lenny breau, guthrie govan, alan holdsworth, frank gambale, greg howe)

reggae-(bob marley, damien marley, augustus pablo, peter tosh, bad brains, burning spear)

prog rock/classic rock-(rush, led zeppelin, jimi hendrix, the doors, van halen, pink floyd, the beatles)

yea they definitely played more punk, but they actually have a entire reggae album which i love

Nice jazz list, I'm gonna check it out, thanks :D

edit: OMG Guthrie Govan is AMAZING! I can't believe I never heard of him until now!

I guess i got quite a broad taste, but my favorite list would be :

1 trance all kinds (hard trance , goa trance, techno trance etc.) but not the shitty stuff they play on the radio.

2 metal all kinds (system of a down, rage against the machine, muse, machinehead, 3 doors down, metallica etc.)

3 classic rock

But usually i got the radio on radio veronica, they play mostly 80's 90's and 00's and mostly songs with guitars in it :)

Lots of metal here.

I like metal too. Though I recently quit my last metal band: http://www.myspace.com/expulsionmetal

Now I'm going to play progressive rock, with lots of synth and stuff, we're really all fans of King Crimson. I like Swans and everything Michael Gira makes, like Hawkwind, like Godspeed You Black Emperor, like Spastic Ink, like Frank Zappa, like Prokofiev, like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, like Nick Cave, like Mike Keneally, like Radiohead, like Pink Floyd, like Deicide's Legion, like Voivod, like Laibach, like Fantomas, like Carcass, Cannibal Corpse, Entombed and Godflesh, like Macabre, like Philip Glass, like Dead Can Dance.

One of rare people to like Spastic Ink, Hawkwind and Cannibal Corpse, like your style ;D

The only Cannibal Corpse song I can wrap my mind around is: From skin to liquid

Likewise, you're a connoisseur extraordinaire and I bow to thee. Thou art truly master.

You should listen to Kayo Dot or Magma to get into my brain :P

It's like talking about morality, but the question is what is allowed in music...

zappa, spastic ink..good stuff!, im sure you'd love blotted science, wouldn't be surprised if you already listen to them
I like everything except rap. My collection is eclectic. I don't find myself listening to classical much though. Puts me to sleep.

Got to peg myself as mostly a hard rock/metal guy with bands like Tool, Hurt, and most recently In This Moment. Halestorm, Lacuna Coil, Mastadon, and other similar groups are quite enjoyable as well. From there I would go straight over to a group called The Seatbelts which as far as I am concerned has made some of the greatest music I've ever heard. And who can forget men like Paul Oakenfold and Benny Benassi. Wonder over to the rap groups and you got Tech N9ne with his song Dysfunctional. Something a little different are the Yoshida Brothers which use the Shamisen mixed with a modern style for songs like Storm and Rising.

The only one I have heard of is Tool. That is sad! I need to check into the rest of them because i LOVE Tool! As far as rap goes, my favorite is Gorilla Zoe but i love anything with a good beat. I'm a Biggie fan from way back and I have Method Man and Redman in my CD player as we speak :) My least favorite rap is the kind that has very repetitive lyrics. Many of the newer mainstream songs seem to do that.
