Ron Jeremy says violent video games 'worse' than porn
Violent video games have "a much bigger negative influence on kids" than pornography, a leading porn star has claimed.
He said parents should be more worried about the harmful effects of such games.
Mr Jeremy's comments were made at a session called the Great Porn Debate during the Consumer Electronics Show, CES, in Las Vegas.
His comments angered gamers, who accused him of "ignorance".
Mr Jeremy's appearance at CES in Las Vegas caused some raised eyebrows.

I love how video games are the target and not violent movies. I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact that movies are more mainstream and have more powerful lobbies.

I think it also has to do with the fact that in a video game you are actually killing. You sit down in front of your television, press the button, and feel like a bad ass when you get that head shot. Where as a movie you are just an observer, you aren't causing the mayhem you are just witnessing it.

Actually, a video game does not come close to the experience of killing. I've done both, and the video game is just that, a game.

If violent video games really had a significant impact on violent crimes, you'd think we'd see some conclusive studies on it by now. Exposure to real violence can be quite damaging to a normal person and there is plenty of study bearing that out. However, if there is a body of evidence contained in reputable studies making a positive correlation between violence in movies or video games, I have never come across it.
But you are right, it is interesting how when some kid shoots up his school, that parents seize upon the fact that the kid liked to play violent video games. The fact that most young males engage in this activity without shooting up their schools seems to escape them. I guess it makes them feel better, having something to blame and make sense of it all for them.

You're exactly right, Reggie. In fact, it's very typical for parents or mass media to blame crimes on new media or entertainment so long as it isn't mainstream at the time. Years ago people would say that Rock music is satanic. Obviously none of us here believe that satan exists, but we can clearly see in current times that the vast number of christans who enjoy rock music are not suddenly all turning into satanists. Rock music has become mainstream and normal over the course of several decades and is no longer targeted.
Once another generation or so has passed and everyone in positions of power has grown up playing video games or has had friends who play them, they will become more fully accepted and these arguements will no longer be made. Entertainment media (books, movies, games, music, comics, etc) being blamed for violent or otherwise bad behavior is one of my pet peeves.
It's like that story on here recently where an Atheist book was found in some killer's home. WOW, that's WHY he killed those people!! That godless heathen!! If only he hadn't be brainwashed by that evil book which made him reject god's perfect love in favor of satanic atheism.

Haha! As I was reading your post, I was thinking of that very thing!
Yeah, no one mentions that three Bibles were also found or that books on atheism have been best sellers for years now.

I think Kris' initial response to the original question is the real answer to why violent movies aren't blamed more - parental participation and guidance. I'm sure the numbers of parents attending a showing of a violent movie with their children versus playing a violent video game with their children would be something around 10 to 1.

Good point! I wonder if Matt's information about serial killer obsession from porn is taken from a too narrow demographic? Certainly American culture's weird love/hate obsession over genitals and sex is at odds with other societies. Would making a young, budding psychopath feel ashamed over his sexual expression drive him to obsess over it and be driven more towards porn?
