I'm a big fan of science and technology as well as humans. I like the transhumanist movement and was just wondering what your thoughts and feelings are about it?
Please stay on topic and don't obsessively talk about how religion is mostly anti-human etc. I already know that. :P
I'm more interested in how humanity can be better, have more enjoyable lives and evolve in positive ways. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism
Thanks and I look forward to your ideas and perspectives. :)

Has anyone ever actually reached a conclusion, generally acceptable by everyone, as to exactly what IS human? Where does humanity begin and end?

I think the real question is, what's so wrong with being more than human?
Permalink Reply by T A A on November 21, 2012 at 11:35pm Well sure if you want to get all metaphysical, but generally speaking, the definition of a species is that it is reproductively speaking isolated, either by chromosomal incompatibility, or by geographic. This is generally accepted in the scientific world. Beyond that world, I couldn't say, for I don't have any imaginary soul, I'm strictly evidence based, though it's amusing to question for the mere sake of a question :)
Permalink Reply by kOrsan on November 19, 2012 at 11:24pm Nate, there is a great video game that's about the advancements in human augmentation, and the protests against it.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution. They even have a live action trailer, check it out. (It has the conservative propaganda tone to it)
As for what side I stand on, let me put it like this. There is a character in the game who wanted to sabotage the microchip that controls all humans' augmentations because he thought humanity should just not have that kind of technology. I put a bullet in his head.
I'm all for it, and I want to write more on this topic, but I only had 3 hours of sleep and a wicked headache, so give me some time :)
Permalink Reply by Nate Lundgren on November 20, 2012 at 10:08am Equating science with playing god=epic fail. Humans have been and always will be in control of their own humanity not outside imaginary things. There are so many faulty premises in this trailer it makes my head hurt thinking about how stupid they are.
Of course there will be some negative aspects of some technology but I highly doubt that the majority of the negative and extreme examples this talks about will become a reality.
As far as preserving or conserving a "pure" human, that is just a stupid (backward-thinking) idea. If some people want to choose to be stupid, I won't stand in their way but I also will not associate with them any more than necessary.
Like the quakers or tribes in the jungle, I'm fine with leaving them alone to enjoy their lifestyles how they see fit. However, I want to have an improved, longer and better life so I will work for and support any efforts to accomplish that.
There is no time pressure Korsan, I look forward to your writings on this subject.
I agree with Melvinotis about how transhumanism is already happening and is continuing to do so right under the noses of many people without them having a clue about it. hahaha
Permalink Reply by Sagacious Hawk on November 20, 2012 at 6:59pm You aren't supposed to like the video. It's for Purity First which in the game, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, is essentially a political uprising/counter revolution (not unlike the moral majority that rose because of the sexual revolution) who also have a political organization and terrorist wing, kind of like Hamas. They're one of the antagonists groups in the game, and they are luddites who are run by some pastor who has Illuminati connections. It's a neat sociological concept, which we may one day see.
Permalink Reply by Nate Lundgren on November 20, 2012 at 7:31pm Thanks for clarifying, I was wondering about it. The game sounds interesting.
Permalink Reply by Sagacious Hawk on November 20, 2012 at 7:54pm I enjoyed it. 1st/3rd person stealth/action/RPG/shooter. It's a serious hybrid with a great story and multiple ways to play. You can actually play through without having to kill anyone except the bosses (those are kill or be killed situations). On top of it, there are a lot of "what if" science articles lying around in the game relating to "advances" in augmentations. My first time playing through, I thought some of them were based on real science. You can get it for about $20-30 right now for new, if I remember right.

I enjoyed this show and it explores the ethics of some transhumanism issues.
