First off, I'd like to apologise for that title, got carried away. But anyway, here are a few things my mum said:
In response to something along the lines of "What religion would you say you are, on like a form or something?" replied with something along the lines of "Well, I don't really believe in god, but I think I would put C of E. I wouldn't put 'ATHEIST' (said in a fashion making sound as though atheism was some form of violent and activistic cult) down."
And when I was telling her about the "Operation Christmas Child" conversion flyers which those making the gift boxes aren't told about she used in her response the term "Christian morals" to mean common decency.
I suppose this kinda shows that we atheists, for some reason, have a reputation that is harmful to us. Why do you think this is? Do you think that it's simply because religions and religious people try their hardest to make us out as satanists? Or do you think it's for some other reason? Let me know?
Also what do you think about the use of the term "christian morals" as a substitute for common decency? Does it annoy you? Do you think it should annoy you? Do you not really care so long as you're not barraged with religious nonsense?
I personally think that it is probably because religious people want to discourage atheism, and also (for the second question) that I don't mind that much, because it's just a case of culture, it'll pass with time in my opinion, but it can't be rushed and isn't that big a deal.
Please, let me know what you think!
