The Unbelievable Truth: Why America has become a nation of religious know-nothings

This is an article from October 2010 by Daniel Dennett, that came out just after the Pew poll on religion in America. I just ran across it today, and it does not appear to be posted on TA yet. - Dallas

The Unbelievable Truth: Why America has become a nation of religious know-nothings

The new study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, released this week, shocked many with the revelation that atheists and agnostics tend to know more about the world's religions than believers do.

Pew researchers asked more than 3,000 Americans 32 central questions about the Bible, Christianity and other world religions. On average, people who took the survey got half the answers wrong - and many even tripped on basic questions about their own faith.

Fully 54% of Protestants could not identify Martin Luther as the person who started the Protestant Reformation. Forty-five percent of Catholics did not know that their church teaches that the consecrated bread and wine in holy communion are not merely symbols, but actually become the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

But we shouldn't be that surprised by the fact that supposedly faithful people had major gaps in knowledge about the religions in which they claim to believe. The explanation - or at least most of it - is not hard to see in the recent history of religion.

@ Adriana: Yes, I remember the original research, but I meant we didn't have the article by Dennett. I could not find it in the Forum or the Blogs when I searched for it.

@ Doone: Thanks for providing the additional link.

Okay, this is just getting weird! : P
I wasn't biting your head off, btw. : )
Dunno! But you can't blame me! Maybe you need to try some holistic healing or perhaps you need to elevate your chakras.
THIS is why I push science learnings in schools and encourage people to be curious about things. Without asking questions, we are setting ourselves up for failure. It is beyond imperative to be curious about everything. We must ask "why?" at every turn, or else humans rightly deserve the title of "sheeple".
I was at a Dan Dennett talk last week (in Ireland). He made an interesting point about religious education being considered as the fourth “R”. It would be compulsory to teach the history and views of all current and extinct religions to all children. In order to advance in school it would become an exam subject. The idea is that children who are home schooled would have to learn about other religions and become more tolerant and broadminded. I am unsure of the American schooling system and how workable this would be. However it is a noble idea and its merits are worth considering.
Why should a believer know anything in a nation where everyone owns a cell phone and can call their omniscient mentor for answers? Seeking knowledge all by oneself is a waste of time, you'd better go shopping to keep the economy running, and work hard to pay your bills. Yup, that's what every responsible American should do!

I had heard about this test but had'nt read the article.

Very interesting indeed, i just took that test and scored 73% (answered 11 out of 15 questions correctly)

Not to bad i guess :)

Bwahahahaha!

This has been my experience. I was religious at one time. I didn't think my faith was as strong as others. I thought studying more would make me for faithful. As it turns out, their faith was out of sheer ignorance of Holy Writ and my education only made me lose my faith.

I always love reading about that, people losing their religion because they sat down and really read with a critical eye what it says in the bible.

Richard Dawkins  also has alot of letters from former religious people and they sure are touching and very inspiring to read.

I've visited RDs site, but not spent much time there. Thanks for the link. Lots of good stuff to read through.
