Learning about the Universe can be great, but sometimes just looking at the pictures is enough to inspire you with a sense of awe. Post the wonderful images of the Universe that you run across here. If you don't have anything to add right now, select 'follow' anyway so you can be informed of new posts. I just can't get enough of this stuff.

What you're seeing here is the highest resolution photograph of the sun available to date, part of a brand new series of NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) observations. The SDO mission promises "10 times better clarity than a high-definition television," NASA says, and this first SDO image doesn't disappoint.

Centaurus A, a galaxy about 11 million light-years away, takes on the shape of a whirling dervish in this spectacular composite image of the raw power generated by the supermassive black hole at its core. Jets and lobes (orange) powered by the black hole, which is millions of times the mass of our sun, were imaged by the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope in Chile. X-rays (blue) were seen by the orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory. Visible light data, from the Wide Field Imager on the Max-Planck/ESO 2.2-meter telescope, also in Chile, shows the dust lane in the galaxy, as well as background stars. The x-ray jet in the upper left extends for about 13,000 light-years from the black hole. Material in the jet is travelling at about half the speed of light.

This image provided by NASA Wednesday June 29, 2011 shows the galaxy best known as Messier 78, the two round greenish nebulae are actually cavities carved out of the surrounding dark dust clouds. The extended dust is mostly dark, even to Spitzer's view, but the edges show up in mid-wavelength infrared light as glowing, red frames surrounding the bright interiors. The image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope exposes the depths of this dusty nebula with its infrared vision, showing stellar infants that are lost behind dark clouds when viewed in visible light. A string of baby stars that have yet to burn their way through their natal shells can be seen as red pinpoints on the outside of the nebula. (AP Photo/NASA)
