The state Senate in Texas just voted to ban abortions after 20 weeks, require physicians who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital, and requires all abortions to take place in fully equipped surgical centers. About 90% of the abortion clinics in Texas fail to meet the requirements.
Republicans who passed the measure, including Governor Rick Perry and Lt. Governor David Dewhurst and Senate Republicans, claim the legislation protects women’s health and unborn children.
The Texas Medical Association and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists opposed the measures.
Perry told an annual anti-abortion rally in Austin that his goal was to “make abortion, at any stage, a thing of the past” and that the ideal world was a world without abortion.
Dewhurst, who has called for overturning Roe v. Wade, crowed on twitter: “We fought to pass SB5 thru the Senate last night, & this is why!” and attached a graphic showing how the legislation would force clinics to shut down.
It's no stretch to imagine what would happen if religious men like Rick Perry and David Dewhurst ever get their way. Roe versus Wade is overturned. Medical science, which indicates fetal viability begins at 24 weeks and fetal consciousness begins at 28 weeks, is ignored. Abortion at any stage becomes a thing of the past. A woman is stripped of the right to choose what happens to her body once she becomes pregnant. Texas, as a result, begins to legislate 77,603 unwanted pregnancies to full term every year.
The state or the mob casts aside science and reason, and throws a choke-hold on women, gays, racial minorities, or non-believers, and it's invariably for the sake of their God and their religion. It's endless. It's routine. It's legislation intended to force their views on those who do not believe as they do.
How can anyone confronted with that stark reality conclude that religion is not the enemy of those whose whose freedoms it misses no opportunity to take away?
