I was talking to someone else about the license plate controversy that we have had the past couple of years over the "I believe" plate here in SC. It was approved, then denied, then that was appealed, there are petitions, and I don't even know if they've ever finally approved it or not. Our Lt. Gov., Andre Bauer, is a big advocate for the tag.

I don't know why Christians feel the need to have such tag, especially when everyone that goes to the DMV gets the option to have our state tag or the "In God We Trust" tag at no extra charge.

Why do they need both options? And btw, I see this tag more than our state license plate one. Probably because it is free and everyone is asked if they want the "In God We Trust" tag instead of the palmetto tag.  I know they asked me that every time I've had to apply for a tag here.

Does anyone else have this issue? Are "In God We Trust" tags in every state? What are your opinions on these STATE ISSUED tags?

Indiferent. The majority of people are believers and they vote for this. In a democracy 51% of the people override the decision of the other 49%. At least it does not affect the freedom of each individual.
Wonder what would be the response with "I do not believe" on the plate. Zero tolerance from the believers, is my guess.
Yeah, that's the problem.  I wonder why they can't just have bumper stickers.  I wonder when will the government learn to stay neutral in matters of religion.

I wonder the same. If they'd stay neutral, we wouldn't have such uproars. Do they not understand that by doing stupid crap like this, they are causing the controvers? If Christians never got their "In God We Trust" on our money in the first place, they wouldn't think anything about not having it on there now.

Luckily, the atheists in the lower part of the state here started a non-profit and were able to get approval for this tag:

BUT, to my understanding, you have to be a member of "Secular Humanists of the Low Country" and you have to present the DMV with an up-to-date, valid membership card saying that you're member of the group in order to be considered for the tag. It's unfair because anyone can get the christian tags.

SC also has the "Choose Life" plate. There have been lawsuits to have a "Pro Choice" plate but the plates were never passed. That has been some time ago, though. We still only have the "Choose Life" ones, so I guess the pro-choicers just don't matter as much.

Yeah, they are still clearly playing favorites.  It's just religious bullying by the majority, which is typical.  Honestly, if they government wants to go down this road (which it shouldn't) then they need to provide options for plates of all faiths and non-faith.  I would say that at minimum they need to make available plates for Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Baha'i, Atheism, Wicca, and some sort of Paganism.
Agreed.
I have a feeling that requests for Islamic plates wouldn't go over well... It would be considered "promoting terrorism."
When my brakes fail as I careen wildly up to a red light - I know who to plow into from behind to slow my car down. My choice prior to this was any 'baby on board' mobile.
MD has the standard tag (which is a War of 1812 tag until 2015), bay tag, farm tag, and many organizational tags. Haven't seen any religious tags though. I'll agree that there is no need for 'god tags'. Especially when I've read of Atheists being turned down for vanity plates that said as such.
Speaking of the "In God We Trust" on the money, I've taken to overwriting God with "Ra" on dollar bills. Somewhat fitting, I think, with the all-seeing-eye over the pyramid.

Technically illegal to "deface" currency, but I'd argue that the real defacement started in the 1950's with the illegal motto.
Actually, I looked into it a couple of years ago when I started defacing my money and it isn't technically defacing it unless you're trying to commit some sort of fraud or mutilate it. I can't remember where I got the info, but it was online somewhere. I've been simply marking god out of it with a sharpie.
