The economy is on the rocks and for a lot of young people one of the few ways for them to make it in life is to join the armed forces it seems, what do you think?

one of my close relatives is asking himself should I join the armed forces?

His mother and father are both bible thumping Christians and he is as well, I'm trying to come up with some good reasons to give him not to join, I hope it's not too late to try to help him make the best choice.

I'm sure that many of us have people we know who are asking the same question so how about it what can we tell them to help them make the best choice?

by the way Don I'm not the one that is trying to decide it is my nephew and any one else who reads this that may be asking that question. I'm trying to find good reasons to give him not to join.
Thanks, Les, I got that.  The body of your post makes your purpose clear--although the title of the discussion could invite misinterpretation.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

No compromises in life are worth losing your self identity to become a professional war monger. Conscripts to the Vietnam was at least could protest the war and killing because they forced into it.

But if you volunteer, you're basically selling yourself down short. All the money wasted on war should be spent in war mongering should be relocated to education and healthcare and the EPA in order to get all the pollutants out of our lives.

Please don't go :(

Very well stated thank you It's not me but 1 of my relatives that is considering going one of the main reasons that the military is funded is so the corporations can make profits

the military is a wonderful opertunity. though, personally, I'll never join. infact if the draft were ever reinstated, i'd flee the country.

what i have against the military, or the government in general is this: there is always going to be prejudice against atheists.

anyway, i'd never make it in the military..i would speak up about way more things then they would like, and probably end up with a discharge, or in front of a firing squad. lol

I am in the Marines. I love what I do. I joined to defend my country and my family. I decided to leave my business to my partner and join after seeing how many other people had died to give me my freedom. I love what I do. I also believe that we were needed and are still needed in the middle east. For every civilian killed in the news 100 are saved. For every terrorist that attacks service members over there fighting there is one less to pilot a plane into a building or detonate a bomb. And the terrorists freely admit that if we were no there that they would come here. I also feel that if by dying that I can save one other person than I died well. However I would never suggest someone join just for a job. They may like it but most likely will end up hating the four years that they are in. As for being a warmonger I am unfortunately not. I am as most people serving today am tired of multiple deployments. But I will continue to do what I feel is needed of me. After meeting, living, and deploying with the Marines I have, I could not just get out and let them go on without me. There are a lot of benefits of being in the military. However once you join your stuck, so if you do not join for the right reasons then the all the benefits will be out weighed by the costs.
