The woman who helped the two murderers escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York was apparently having sex with one of them. On CNN the discussion became how much sex goes on in prison and who is having sex with whom and how do you prevent it?

Leaving the escaped prisoners aside, is it right or wrong to try to make prison a sex-free place.

I know we have one person here at least who has worked in a prison system so I'm looking forward to their contribution on the subject.

Aw shucks Unseen, do you really want the sordid details of prison sexual life? lol

It (prison sex) goes on often and among everyone, staff included. Sweet talking convicts have successfully cajoled more than one corrections officer to commit what they know is wrong. They (convicts) become supremely adept at reading the mind of others; what else have they to do. If you don't remain detached from the subtle inquires of inmates you risk being compromised. As to the actual sex acts themselves, they take place everywhere they can garner a moments seclusion- an empty communal shower, a library closet, kitchen bathroom, food storage area, on and on. Some will even crawl on their hands and knees to silently sneak into the bunk of another after lights are out for the evening. The aspect of it that blew my hair back the most was that some heterosexual males convicts would allow themselves to be serviced by homosexuals, despite a risk of AIDS. And they would tell you that once they were back in the Free World they would never entertain such a notion again. As you could expect, masturbation is common, especially in the shower stall and at night in the bunk. The ugly side of prison sex is the convicts who predate on physically inferior homosexual inmates. They will look for every opportunity to be serviced by these individuals. Sometimes it is consensual and many times not. Unfortunately it often involves intentional physical abuse/harm -rape. It's all very distasteful to put it mildly. And this creates a continual problem of trying to keep certain individuals separate from one another to avoid these incidents. Prison rape is now taken very seriously and all incidents require investigations and reams of paperwork. It needs to be that way though- even prisons have to have some resemblance of civility, otherwise it all gets out of hand. If an individual commits prison rape or attempted rape they are classified as predators and normally sent off to a facility where they are isolated in one man cells for 22 hours a day, every day. They have no contact with the general pop (ulace).

Personally, if an inmate has the initiative to always be on their best behavior and cooperates with staff then I don't have a problem rewarding them with occasional acts of consensual sex with those who visit from the Free World. Although, my state doesn't permit it unless it involves a marriage performed while being in prison. Then I believe it is a one shot opportunity for them to be intimate.

Wow, you're not at all the person I thought would reply (s/he being at one time a corrections officer).

Anyway, what I was getting at is this: Rather than putting people in hoping they'll be as chaste as monks (are supposed to be), wouldn't it be best to make sure their sexual desires are serviced on a regular basis?

Ed's description is actually astoundingly accurate, if it's me you were waiting for, I don't have a bone to pick with anything he said.

I will add however that sex is most often used as a weapon...perhaps the most powerful weapon of all, and the effects are devastating....which is why consentual sex should most definitely NOT be allowed....ever. If we allowed that to happen, very very bad things would happen.

I'm puzzled. I've read the description of all rape going on in prison. What is the mechanism by which allowing consensual sex would actually make matters worse. Is there no one in prison who would benefit from having sex they don't have to terrorize to get?

...because there is no such thing as "consensual sex" in prison. Even if a prisoner is doing it "with consent," it is not the same kind of consent that we mean on the outside. There is always an element of power and control that places people's lives in danger. Notice people's being plural. That was not accidental.

Wasn't talking about consensual sex among prisoners at all.

Prisoner, CO's or vice-versa......don't matter...

...like I said.... there is no such thing as "consensual sex" in prison.

I have to disagree with that statement. Generally speaking there is usually coercion involved in predatory sexual incidents but there is also a small number of cases where the sex is definitely consensual. I was witness to one such case.

There is still an element of power and control that does not exist on the outside, and even if sex at one given moment is consensual, it can ALWAYS be turned around and used as a weapon under every circumstance.

I stand by what I said and can provide detailed examples if you want...or we can agree to disagree.

Suppose I'm in a cell with a compatible person and given that we are sex partners of opportunity... That or no sex at all. Why can't they give each other pleasure consensually.

Anyway, I was thinking more of sex partners from outside. Wives, girlfriends, comfort girls.

It just seems to me that sex is one of the basic needs, so why not provide legal, consensual outlets?

That sort of thing happens. But we're not talking college dorm roomies here. Dynamics change...constantly. There is no such thing as "down time" because there are always threats, either imminent, potential threats that are created from the ever-shifting chaos. There are times when true relationships can foster, but they are not stable, because they can be easily severed. I have seen it over and over again.

Anyway, I was thinking more of sex partners from outside. Wives, girlfriends, comfort girls.

There are ways they can get around this. And wives can have conjugal visits depending on the inmate's classification, and whether they have good time and are following all rules and regulations.

The one thing you have to remember is that conjugal visits are one of the most highly dangerous times for both the inmate, their family, and the prison staff. It's not a priveledge to be given lightly.

In reality there are instances of where people in everyday life are put into protracted circumstances that don't afford opportunities for sexual encounters. Military assignments, research station outposts, etc. If these individuals can take care of themselves and not go crazy with sexual frustration then I don't see why it is necessary to provide sexual accommodations for prisoners. Although, as I stated elsewhere, if convicts are cooperative and respectful of others then it could be something to offer as an incentive. But I believe there would arise problems that we haven't even considered. STD's etc.
