I've been a part of this community for awhile, but I'm not really active in it. I want to get more involved and participate in conversations, but I feel like kind of a novice when it comes to the discussions here.
Are there any books that people can recommend?
I'm looking for some philosophical kind of stuff, along with some counterpoints to religion. I also am interested in the political side of things (like how religion manipulates our American culture). I have a background in conservation and biology, so science stuff is welcome, too.

Permalink Reply by Nelson on May 5, 2012 at 7:45pm I made this a couple years ago. It's still a good resource but it's a bit out of date now. I've continued reading and there have been a bunch of books that have come out since.
And then I just posted these two posts a few days ago. This one on why we need to be careful to think rigorously (that is, why thinking rigorously requires overt effort) and how actually to think carefully in a rigorous way. And this one on philosophical arguments against theism.
