The concept of pornography begins with religion and its concept of sin. In the West, prior to the intrusion of The Christian church, sexual representations were "erotica," which is purely a descriptive term. Once the church got involved, erotica became "pornography" (literally, graphics of whores). "Pornography" (the word) isn't a descriptive term, it's a negatively judgmental term.

I think if more atheists understood that pornography as something bad is an invention of religious folk, and not something which is necessarily wrong or bad, tolerance of it in the atheist community might result. This isn't to say that some sorts of porn are necessarily good, such as pedophile porn, but we need to understand that erotica isn't new, and that it's a natural expression of natural interests and tendencies.

What's unnatural is the attitude that there is something inherently wrong with it.

And yet the "50 Shades of Grey" trilogy is a worldwide best seller.  Why do you suppose that is?  Stylish prose and elegant sentence structure with a riveting plot?

Porn is wank material.  Written or pictoral, it is adult sex.  I think it is a little fallacious to drag "child porn" or "animal porn" into the equation - that is a different thing altogether.  I am pretty sure that you are not saying that one leads to the other, but the way you grouped them together would give that impression.

I still don't get how vapid drivel like that is so successful, yet the poetic and sardonic satire of pedo-baiting never got popular.

Those guys had an imagination that could cast shadows on those novels.

Perhaps it's the attraction of the forbidden.  I'm not all that interested in porn, but I absolutely don't have a problem with its existence.

Neither do I, what I meant was that there's much better/funnier stuff out there. Maybe I'm too depraved.

50 Shades of Grey simply was the right work at the right time, when women were becoming more accustomed to extreme erotica and feeling like exploring some of their bondage/discipline/humiliation fantasies.

A lot of what may appear to be abuse is consensual, as for the rest, it should be dealt with legally but not with stereotyping.

Who said porn is special? More special than what?
