The concept of pornography begins with religion and its concept of sin. In the West, prior to the intrusion of The Christian church, sexual representations were "erotica," which is purely a descriptive term. Once the church got involved, erotica became "pornography" (literally, graphics of whores). "Pornography" (the word) isn't a descriptive term, it's a negatively judgmental term.

I think if more atheists understood that pornography as something bad is an invention of religious folk, and not something which is necessarily wrong or bad, tolerance of it in the atheist community might result. This isn't to say that some sorts of porn are necessarily good, such as pedophile porn, but we need to understand that erotica isn't new, and that it's a natural expression of natural interests and tendencies.

What's unnatural is the attitude that there is something inherently wrong with it.

Anyway ... I would still like Arcus to show me the source of his claim...

1. What is your source for proving it in the first place?

2. I just referenced Pinker (Better Angels) and the Internet (google "porn").

Pinker is a nice guy and probably a good Psychologist  too but ...  Im sorry .. he is not an Anthropologist nor a Biologist nor a Historian.

Ive posted an easy to watch documentary up there as my latest source of information on this topic..

 ...

And I've just posted a very simple argument that you have dismissed off hand.

I have watched the Dawkins doc you linked, and I'm not quite sure you have, or at least you may project the behavior of monkeys directly upon humans.

"or at least you may project the behavior of monkeys directly upon humans."

I think that it was the behaviour of the Lemurs that caught my attention.

(Im still navigating my way around here so apologies if I miss something for the time being ....)

The target audience being people who use youtube?

Anyway, I'm not sure what you think he concluded other than that religious people feel more guilt about sex and porn than nonbelievers.

"The target audience being people who use youtube?"

Why would you say that?

I first saw it on the ABC ... I dont quite know where your going with the youtube thing. As if that somehow means that its not correct or something ..

Dawkins is always correct in my eyes .. To me, he is a trusted source of information because he has done the homework for me. So If he says it ... then its true.

I found it on Youtube.

Dawkins is always correct in my eyes .. To me, he is a trusted source of information because he has done the homework for me. So If he says it ... then its true.

I just discovered a new faith: Dawkinsism.

lol

,I recall reading that  those societies which are less sexually repressed are less violent over-all. Can't say I remember where I read that.

I remember hearing some pious Catholic league apologist on a local radio station decry some new movie as being completely pornographic and that it seemed to become more sickening each time he watched it.

When Samuel Johnson published his first dictionary the local women’s Christian group complimented him for not including certain “bad words” and he returned the compliment by thanking them for knowing which words to check for.

Enforced celibacy is the worst type of sexual perversion so beware of what advice they give.

Has anyone ever died from "no sex"?
