It's a difficult one at the best of times, especially given that in recent times all the parties seem to resemble each other. At least that's the case here in the UK. I appreciate that in the US the Republican and Democrat parties are still very polarized.... However, in the UK, since the formula of having a slick and smooth operator in charge (i.e. Tony Blair) worked so well for Nu' Labour, it seems to be the only formula to work with. Very few of the main parties now actually seem to stand for anything. It's all about spin and damage control, and short term planning and thinking working towards the next local/general elections.....

 

I find it hard to place myself into a certain camp as I find that my opinions seem to vary between being "conservative" and "liberal" depending on the topic at hand. More and more I find myself becomming more passionate about politics. However, that passion leads itself more to sheer frustration and anger at the idiots in charge, and the idiots (like me) who are simply let it happen....

 

I like to think that my views tend to focus more along being so called common sense, but then doesn't everyone think that about their own views...?

You guys are lucky in the U.K. Only 35% of people in the U.K. claim they believe in god while 43% said they don't; and 25% are full-blown atheists.

I'm not determined what to vote next...vote christian conservative just to piss off europe? Vote for my driving instructor although her party is fucking stupid? Continue not voting because christian conservatives will win either way for the next 50 years? Decisions...decisions

I am conservative and can't stand the "religious right".  Even when I was a Christian conservative I couldn't stand to hear politicians saying "god this" and "god that".  I like to base my politics on reason.

 

I am a conservative in that I support classical liberalism, not this bleeding heart stuff and none of that religious right crap.

 

I support equal marriage.  I support legalized abortion.

I don't think that government exists to solve all our problems.

 

Religion has no place in politics.

We need to examine each issue separately instead of just going with a political party.

I'd say that liberalism is more precisely, if incorrectly, defined by the Right.  I am as "liberal" as they come, yet my Conservative friends often find my views counter their expectations.

You should probably not define yourself before you have thoroughly researched the different standpoints. Politics is not a "set" science. There is precious little liberalism in the US currently, there is mostly neo-conservatism (Bush, Palin, Fox News), "New Left" (Dean, Kucinich, Huffington Post), and moderates (Clinton, Pataki, Washington Post+FT).I would say Obama at election was closer to new left than moderates, but has since changed to become a lot more moderate.

Liberalism is widely regarded as to have died after protracted disease when Reagan was elected. However, it's the new cool thing since 2008 broke the neo-cons. It is also going to severely tarnish the policies of the New Jesus (Reagan), to the point that your grandchildren will know as much about him and Bush the Second as you know of Presidents John Tyler and Martin Van Buren.

Beware that moderates and liberals are extremely boring to listen to and read.

With this clarification that moderation in politics has nothing to do with actual moderation. Nothing in political lingo ever means what it says. Everything is related to spin. In Foreign Policy lingo for example "moderation" usually just means obedient, for domestic purposes it usually means:  devoted to elite interests.
