I am not very big on politics. I don't really follow them and I am kinda in over my head when I try to talk about politics with anyone. I have defined myself as liberal but that is only because I know I am NOT conservative. I am trying to figure out which party suits me best. I know it isn't republican, but I have recently learned that there are many more parties than just Dem. Rep. and Ind.
What party do you belong to and what are the main reasons why you feel that it is the party that you belong to?

Permalink Reply by Melissa M. on July 3, 2011 at 3:07pm I'm a registered Democrat. It's funny though, it's like I've always been one. When I was growing up, I just always found myself in agreement with very liberal positions and ideas.
I wouldn't call myself terribly "active", but I am pretty informed on a daily basis as well as very opinionated on the subject of politics. Of course I guess I'm active if you consider contacting legislators and writing op-eds active. It's just that it's my opinion that if I don't do something about things for which I feel strongly, then I really don't have the right to bitch about it. In other words, I can't expect others to act if I'm not willing to act on my own.
Permalink Reply by matt.clerke on July 3, 2011 at 9:59pm Probably wont help with any decisions you need to make (Unless you plan on voting in Australia any time soon) but for what it's worth, I am a fan of the Australian Sex Party and the Australian Pirate Party. For me, civil liberties are one of the most important things in a society, certainly more important than SOME things the current (and previous) governments waste time by discussing.
FYI the Pirate Party was started in Sweden under the name Pirat Partiet(or something like that) and is primarily concerned with digital civil liberty such as copyright. There may be a Pirate Party forming in the US if there is enough people concerned about digital rights. Australian Sex Party was formed to combat the forthcoming mandatory censorship of Australian internet but also concerns itself with a wider variety of issues such as gay marriage, drug policies, and removing tax-exempt status from profit taking religious organisations.

Permalink Reply by Dustin on July 4, 2011 at 12:10am I think we should have much more freedom to do what we want ... have more choice over our lives and bodies ... shouldn't be fined for not wearing seatbelts ... should be able to trap and kill animals that are destroying our own property without a license , allow those younger than 18 to legally drink at a local bar if they so wish etc. I think government should stay the hell out of our private matters. I don't think they have any business telling us what we can and can't do when it comes to our own bodies and matters of mental or physical health , for ourselves or for our children.
What does that make me?
Permalink Reply by matt.clerke on July 4, 2011 at 4:53am I'm with u on the freedoms. Government should not be able to interfere with me wanting an abortion, wanting to smoke weed, marrying the same sex, etc. But I think I lean right when it comes to issues such as immigration, capitalism, and social security.
I have the same question: What does that make me?
