Greetings from chilly Illinois.  I'm a retired police sergeant and I have been "out" as an atheist since I was 20 years old.  When I was in my teen years, my dear grand parents introduced me to the bible and I began attending the church of god.  It's a pentecostal church so I began to believe that I could have a personal relationship with god.  I tried very hard to reach that goal by speaking in tongues, but I discovered that it was not going to happen.  I was very disappointed and I began to back away from religion and my grand parents.  I went to a public library and found a book by Timothy Ferris, "Coming of age in the milky way".  It changed my life and I have been an atheist ever since.

I view all the worlds religions as cults one needs to escape from.  My hero's are Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss and the late Christopher Hitchens.  I hope to add my two cents once and a while and gain some insight.

Hi John, welcome to Think Atheist :). Lots of people here to argue, debate and disagree with. The one constant opinion, is that we are all responsible for our own behaviour. I hope you enjoy your TA experience.
Welcome to TA Officer :)

Welcome to TA

“Cult”: the other fellow’s religion.

Hey welcome John. Has your view towards religion ever softened? Did you encounter much difficulties with family, friends, co-workers, fellow policemen?

Thanks to Christopher Hitchens, I consider myself an anti-theist.  So you might say my views have hardened.  I'm sure that being an atheist effected my work as so many of my fellow officers and supervisors were religious.  Thanks everyone for the welcome.

Is your subject line an unintentional music reference?

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones

LOL!! Awesome

Welcome Officer Sir!

I'm a big Stones fan and I thought it fit for my introduction.  I assumed everyone would get the reference.  It just means I'm old.

Hi John. I agree on your view of religions being cults. I spent two years attending a baptist church and found the atmosphere so obviously cult-like it left me puzzled that others didn't see it. Welcome to the site, hope you find discussions that interest you.
