Personally, depending on the crime, I think some people are over-sentenced and some are SEVERELY under-sentenced. Take animal killers for instance. Many times people toture and kill numerous amounts of innocent animals and they only receive probation (Very Violent Crime). Then, someone that participates in safe-cracking can receive 15-25 yrs in a maximum securtiy prison (non-violent crime, in my opinion).

As tax payers, we know that the room and board for each inmate comes out of our pockets. There are several people with life sentences that continue to be vicious and reak havoc within the prison walls. Should these problem causing inmates be re-sentenced to lethal injection, or should we continue to support them until they die naturally or another inmate kills them?

Psychologically, does being "locked up" cause more harm than good to the inmates that will be released back into society? Take into consideration the ones that were placed in max. security facilities with inmates serving life sentences.

Oh, and if you agree that animal killers should not go unpunished, please sign my petition for a local issue here in South Carolina:

I am a firm believer in the death penalty.  I think all confirmed (or admitted) murderers, rapists, child molesters, and the like, should be done away with.  Animal abusers/killers I don't think deserve a death penalty or even a life in prison.  Maybe a few years, a fine, and some shelter work, depending on the severity of the crime.  I am more interested in getting people off the streets who harm other humans.
I believe in the death penalty as well, but only in extreme cases. I feel strongly on sentencing for animal abuse because many serial killers began with killing animals. They also did it on the side for fun. Also, if you can torture an innocent animal, you could be capable of harming a child. Maybe they should not receive the death penalty, but lenience shouldn't be granted either. Probation is no sentence at all if you ask me. They should get at least 5 years. Maybe I am harsh, but I think animal abuse falls into the same rotten category as the others. Thanks for the response :)
I don't oppose harsher penalties for torturing or killing animals either. I think people need some examples to be made so they would think twice before they do it themselves. But, if we're talking about abusing and stuff, I can't wait for the day when filling your child's head with religious nonsense would be considered child abuse and illegal as well. That will be the day we got closer to normality and the day when we can actually say we have made progressed as a species.

I, too, say that teaching your kids about satan and burning in hell should be considered child abuse. It causes severe emotional anxiety and the fear of satan torments some people for the rest of their lives.

You can always become president and bomb the shit out of another country... I don't care much for the death penalty, it shows how much we really have evolved that we can't find a better solution. I am against violence in any form, and the death penalty is just fighting fire with fire.
Inmates should be divided based on their sentence, so it will calm things down. You don't put a guy that serves a few years with a guy that has nothing to lose anymore, that's just stupid. The guy who only serves a few years has less chances of increasing his sentence if he has less factors that could provoke him to do so.
I agree, but they are placed together all of the time. My dad, for instance, had a 15 year sentence. He was placed in maximum security and had to witness some fucked up stuff from the life -sentencers. He's seen people killed, raped, beaten. He said that there were cliques and groups. The inmates divided themselves, really. He said there is more racism than anything in prison. Sad. Someone experiences nothing but hate for 15 years and then they are expected to come out nomal. That is why many people continue to commit crime. Prison life is all they know and society is what is scary for them.

It does them no good, not even if they divide themselves. If they divide themselves, the dangerous ones know better whom they should pick on first. They should be completely separated and those that cause trouble should be isolated based on what they've done and if they do it again, isolated more. There is really no one way to deal with prisons and inmates, but we certainly can do better than now.

Why was your father in prison?

O, I meant they divided themselves into cliques. They were still around eachother's violence and hate. I agree that it is unacceptable for them to be mixed in with eachother. If one thing is for sure, the life-sentencers should be seperate from all others.

Sure, separate the life-sentencers, then separate the ones left by what they've done. Murderers with murderers, robbers with robbers, etc. At least this way they only have to deal with their own kind.
Don't know about animal killers. I kill some every year. Deer mainly but I take it you mean pets and such. Prison is not so good if you put say a bank robber with other robbers. They will pick up the skills to be better. They learn for one another. If you get ten years hard time and get out, your a harder person maybe even a killer now even if you weren't before you went in. If they are sentenced to death I think they should be strapped in the chair within a month. I think rape should be as heavily sentenced as murder if not more so. I think the proof should be overwhelming if you get the death sentence. By the way, the shelters kill animals after a set time. Should we do something about this and if so what?
