Oh the vileness!!! This Nun has NONE of my respect!

I have a 4 year old son, and he masterbates. Not in the sexual sense. But as an instinctual comfort. When he lays down or wakes up it is almost a reflexive response that calms his nerves. I am told from other parents that their kids do the same thing. I am no expert on the subject, but I at least have the common sense to know that it is normal. Imagine the horror when a friend: ARCHAEOPOLIS.....I mean teryx....aka El Pajarito Senor... forwarded this article to me:

The title says it all: Catholic Nun To Students: ‘Masturbation Makes Boys Gay And Gay Parents Abuse Their Kids’

It is mind boggling to me that anyone with a brain can believe or adhere to this teaching. And as a mother of a boy I am outraged at the psychological damage to young boys that this is causing. Your thoughts?

It is perverse that people who not only refrain from sex but who view it as sinful are always prepared to comment on it.

I agree, Reg.

A few decades ago I read that Aquinas wrote a marriage manual. He not having married, I concluded (without a shred of additional evidence, by the way) that the manual was his pornography.

Sometimes an early inference is justified.

I think, @Belle, that you should exercise more skepticism about getting your news from blogs like crooksandliars.com .

I get that fomenting a sense of outrage triggers interesting adrenal responses that are gratifying, much like riding roller coasters.  Adrenal responses also tend to make things more memorable, and perhaps make one more likely to associate strongly with "your" group in protection from "their" group.   That's why everyone from Fox News to CrooksandLiars.com employs slanted articles and half-truths in order to provoke that response.  It's effective, so long as your newscast or blog reaches only like-minded people and doesn't run into any skeptics.

I would encourage you to be skeptical of ANY reporting that does this, but especially stuff from fringe blogs.  I have no idea what (or even if) this person said to a group of high schoolers, and certainly can't tell from that blog post.

Some Catholics are attempting to lessen the damage already by suggesting that the reaction was one of anger or outrage. This is what the parents said:

“We believe that same sex couples have the ability to raise happy, well-adjusted and successful children … We believe that homosexual couples are capable of monogamy. As rational people, we know that most homosexual people lead healthy, normal and productive lives like their heterosexual counterparts.”

It would appear that the Christian response had the most outrage on display.

“we the students of Charlotte Catholic High School, acting on our Catholic beliefs, are declaring a formal objection towards all those who do not accept Sister Jane Dominic's lecture … We are outraged that the topics talked about are being debated within a community where the shared faith teaches us what truly is holy and that anyone would stand up against a nun, who has given her life for the Lord, and blatantly deny God’s teachings.”

It has been reported elsewhere: here or here.

They may not be the best examples of peer reviewed evidence ever as there does not appear to be a recording of it. The reports may be only second hand verbal accounts but that does not take from the story as posted above. So we can take it as true. I mean most Catholics base their entire faith on second hand accounts that have no verification whatsoever.

Do you agree with the wording of this petition?

Thanks for the reminder to remain sceptical of what we encounter online. We have seen the light

VII. We understand that Sister Jane Dominic did not say that masturbating will make you homesexual or that the absence of a parent will either. Yet, that she said that by partaking in masturbation will lessen your masculinity and that through the absence of a parent in the home will also make a greater risk for homosexuality.

This kind of statement always gets under my skin. It's literally stating that "A=B, but we didn't say A, we said B."

There are many of these "statements" floating around.

When I was in 11th and 12th grades, the nuns called it self-abuse. Endlessly.

Didn't stop me.

BTW, welcome back, wanna-be exCatholic Dr. Bob. You are finding stuff here that brings you back.

CAPTION CONTEST!

Hey Belle,

Just because she's not allowed to have sex, doesn't mean she should try and ruin it for others.
