Recently, I foolishly made a comment on facebook and found myself engaged in an exchange of religious views.  This person then made a comment, which for them, I suppose was the end all and be all---namely that I would find myself  being judged for all eternity.

Let me caution all that this is a futile discussion with a rabid christian.  They can't and won't listen to any reasoned argument.

That was some time that I will never get back

Many people believe it is pointless to debate publicly with a believer, yet it is only pointless to try to change the believer's viewpoint. When debating about science vs. religion, we debate for those observing the debate, not for the opponent whom we are debating.

Always remember what Pastor Tyson (haha) says

“The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it.” -Neil deGrasse Tyson

You can have your own opinion but you can't have your own facts.

Is gravity an opinion, though? I am talking about pure scientific debate, here. But views on religion, quite frankly are typically always that of opinion. I stay away from that on a status as much as possible.

I thought "You can have your own opinion but you can't have your own facts" was basically a paraphrase of “The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it.”

What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!

I'm reminded of a friend of mine who was a devoted fan of a tv psychic named John Edwards who was proficient at the technique called "cold reading." I told her that that stuff was nonsense. Her reply was that he told actors and actresses things about their past that he could not have known except through mind reading. I said, "Oh yeah. Actors acting surprised at what he seemed to know. Linda, they are ACTORS!"

For a lot of people, if they see something in one or another form of media, it MUST BE TRUE because it's there. Sadly, a lot of people seem to assume that everything they see or read on TV, the Internet, or in a newspaper or magazine is vetted and fact-checked. Sad.

Ron, you won the debate.

You won't get that time back, but you will use the time remaining to you more gainfully.

I took years to figure out that the more people there are who wait for happiness in another life, the fewer people I have to share this life's happiness with.
