I read posts here that call different things, "harmful to humanity."  Others call something, "good" or "bad" or "evil."

A very simple question, who gets to decide the definition of  "harmful to humanity" and what is there critieria? The same for "good," "bad," and "evil?" These are not material terms. If everything is material isn't there just "is" and not these moral declarations if one is being thoroughly atheist?

Help me understand your position so I am fair and honest about the views. Thanks.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The University of Oregon prides itself on having a diverse campus, yet white students clearly make up the majority of the population—over three-quarters—and most minority students are either Asian or Pacific Islander, with a growing Hispanic group. Only about 20 percent of the total student body in recent years has come from a non-white background. While this rate of diversity is lower than that of the United States as a whole, it is in line with the population of the state of Oregon, and native Oregonians will probably not be surprised.

Although you’ll be faced with a fairly homogenous ethnic population if you find yourself at UO, the saving grace of the school is the liberal atmosphere both on campus and in the town of Eugene. Students say that they’re exposed to people from many different walks of life, and that the atmosphere is characterized by acceptance and tolerance of others. You probably won’t find a lot of discrimination based on race, sex, religion, or other personal differences during your time at UO.

Good Amount of Diversity

While UO is not the most diverse campus ever, it is pretty diverse in race, economic background, political beliefs, and sexual orientation. I think possibly the least diverse aspects would be race. The campus is somewhat racially diverse, although there is definitely more White and Asian people than other races. Diversity in all aspects is welcome here.

My Roommate Is Mexican American

My roommate is Mexican American and she is one of my best friends here. She often says how she wishes there were more diversity on campus. The campus is predominantly white.

Facts

Gay Pride

The majority of students are very open about their sexuality in Eugene, and it is well tolerated by both school and town. Groups like the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Alliance (LGBTA) offer a comfortable atmosphere to make everyone welcome.

Political Activity

The UO is a very politically active campus. Students are involved in activities ranging from student government to international protests. A great deal of students are liberal, but people of all political persuasions can be found on campus.

Economic Status

Economic status at UO spans the board. Both the town and the school are home to people from all walks of life. Many are middle class, but all economic statuses are represented

Most Common Religions

The most visible religious affiliation at the UO is Christianity, with student groups like the Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and the Christian Science Organization. Other religious views are also present, however, and on UO’s liberal campus, no single group has a strong or dominating voice.

Minority Clubs on Campus

The University of Oregon offers ethnic/cultural, international, religious, and women’s groups. These clubs and organizations include: Black Student Union, Native American Student Union, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Alliance (LGBTA), African Student Association, International Student Association, Baptist Student Union, Catholic Newman Center, Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship, ASUO Women’s Center, and the Women’s Law Forum.

Yeah I lived in Eugene for a year. I attended a Christian college next door to it before deconversion.  It is a hippy town.  A very hippy town.

The demographics show a lot of white people because there is not enough being done to undo damage to minority cultures that has been done in the past and has ongoing repercussions.   There is nothing the institution can do about that other than break the cycle.  But even Sue and Sue mention experiencing racism while at college. It is that experience that helped them take the caustic stance that angers so many people when they feel attacked for being white when they learn about all this.  They don't pull punches, they don't water it down.

@John Kelly - I had a business in downtown Eugene for a short while back in '96.  Ya, *very* hippy town.

But you know this while line of discussion is just a way for Shabaka to create aggravation, right?  I mean, for him to be judgmental about a school because the students and faculty is primarily white in a state that is primarily white if ludicrous.  And to basically call someone a white supremest when they are actively teach cultural diversity is beyond idiotic.  And, on top of that, to talk about how bad teaching diversity to people who have only ever lived within a single culture, using that to "prove" how "bad" the culture is in the first place, well that just goes way over the line of reason.  It is obvious that his sole purpose is to create agitation and try to get people flustered so that they might say something that he can then twist and manipulate into something to throw back in their faces.  I seriously can't see any profit in playing his pathetic game.

looked up your sue and sue and see that they counsel in cultural diversity...

Why is there a need for "divesity?"...Because European culture is/was so dominante they felt that other cultures should be included and given some recognition. Given this premise, what part of European culture will be diversified? It's ideas of individualism? what about it's systems of democracy or capitalism? How about it's foundation, materialism? What about it's rhetorical ethic? I'm not talking about, and this is crucial, INCLUSION, we are taking about DIVERSITY.

Of course it was.  And you misrepresent Sue and Sue again.  You twist the meaning to imply inquality using the word "some" which is intellectually dishonest.  T  Some is not advocated.  Equal is.  This is the concept of celebrating diversity.

I don't deny that there is white privilege.  We are only arguing whether or not Sue and Sue are "white people scholars", which is an absurd side for you to defend.  You presently have provided nothing.  Society needs diversity because we are a melting pot and it is necessary regardless of privilege levels or dominance.  Few nations have been inclusive and not afforded excess privilege to their own race.  Western society may have some rather bad history but it is producing some powerful philosophical concepts such as celebrating diversity.

some "scholars" think the melting pot can't melt so they made it a salad instead.  Sue and Sue can only teach what they know..I'm sure they do a fine job of it

What we need is re-education using other paradigms, but the money class and their flunkies would pitch a do-do fit..

A salad is a better term to use.  Melting pot is a metaphor, but it is a bit of a dominant culture metaphor.  A salad is what we need.  And salads are delicious.

John -  good to hear from the "voice of reason" again - hope you've been well! Thanks for contributing. I will definitely check out the links, as I'm sure, will others. Again, thanks!

Yeah no problem.  I hope you like the links.  Though on a side note, I have been a fan of that despair.com I linked since 98 or so.  They were the first company to come out with demotivational posters. Like this one:

Very much agree John. We have subconscious psychological biases tilted in favor of people who look the most like the faces we see the most, which tend to be the faces which surround us the most and the face which stares back at you in the mirror. It's not without reason that most women end up with men that resembles their fathers, and men their mothers. It should also be added that such bias is not a white phenomenon, but rather a human phenomenon.

The thing about biases is that they can at least be somewhat mitigated by being consciously aware of them.

I'm sure you can't see what one of "little" intelligence (i have no idea how the Pope could measure it but Europeans can invent their own standards after all they run the world) means when he says, you are limited in your ability to look inward...

The above is all well and true but that just explains the general behavior of humans, the ruckus is about racism and that is unique behavior.. The above explains why people like those who look like them, but what about the ones that don't, the look inward...how do you treat those "biases" when you have fear, xenophobia, need for resources, little to no regard for Nature, and you make the best damn killing machines in the world?

Arcus: White became supreme through violence, division, and conquest of land and information..I can very well understand why some would want to continue.. Why disrespect your ancestors efforts because they suffered greatly to satisfy their cultural essence, many died killing First Peoples and indigenous peoples around the world, suffering malaria, invading lands of hostle black and brown peoples ? Why throw it away now?  Is it in your blood to maintain it no matter what?  Common sense doesn't overide that urge?  Just curious since you wish to uphold your place on the planet..
