I would like to try this again but first can I just let you know that I am an atheist who is trying to understand the religious point of view. This is not the same thing agreeing with them but I truly am trying to see it from their angle. I want to step into their shoes and I want to feel it the way they feel it and in that way, hopefully try to solve problems with them instead of against them. This is empathy. This is peace.

About the name I use  - Evangelia is my Mothers name and the English version of that is Angela. It makes me happy to see my mothers name. David is a biblical name to but that doesnt mean people named David are religious.

I dont know Strega - I really dont.

It could be because of my early experiences in the 80's and 90's

but i really dont know.

my son asked me what I would say if he was gay ... i answered that the only thing I would say is  'as long as your happy'

I have no issue to my children being gay so, it probably is just my early experiences.

For some reason I think of it the other way around. Might have something to do with my browser's search history.

Angela, I am just a guest in this space (taking a break from grading midterms).  I was on my way out, when I found this thread.  I thought it was going to be about gun control, and I was interested in reading the perspectives.  Would you mind if I participated?

@Professor Robert

You've been invited to stay and contribute, all over the other threads you posted on.  So do so.

You don't have to ask. As long as you can take whatever is dished out and can stay away from name calling and such, I'm sure you're welcome here.

Oh, I don't mind at all what is "dished out".   Perspectives are interesting.  The name-calling admonition was also interesting after just reading the comment about "religitards" in a thread about getting along.  ;-)

Oh, the irony!

Some of us didn't waltz our way into this. Some of us have been abused. Some of us have sacrificed much for our convictions. Some of us are literally surrounded. If atheism is easy for you, you are very fortunate. I admire the people on this sight from fundamentalist regions like Egypt or Iran so much. There is nothing wrong with being angry if you have the right to be angry. Anger is not violence. Anger is a normal reaction to injustice by a moral person.

I agree.  I love it when Christians ignore what I tell them about WHY I was raised in an atheist household and try to bully, coerce, and shame me into converting.  It does not help their case at all.

Simon - I havent got a problem with homosexuals and even if i did, I dont think that personal feelings matter in these types of discussions because its more about opening dialogue and solving problems.

Proff Robert - Id love for you to participate.

Robert -  But just remember that the average religious person on the street didnt do that to you... Anger is good because its motivational but its when it becomes destructive that it tends to erode peoples ability for clarity & compassion.

Hi Diane - I'm not sure that the WHY questions are as important as the WHAT questions.

WHAT can we do to solve these things rather that explaing WHY it happened.

I think that atheists and theists have become as bad as each other. Who can listen when everyones shouting.

I dont have answers, I just feel that the way its going isnt good for us.

Im experimenting with something - everytime I get the urge to spit vitriol about religion, I stop and say to myself

"Hey self -, if you think your so smart try doing this in a less agressive more rational way."

Atheist talk about being reasonable and rational but when it comes to discussion, i just dont see it being put into action ...

Changing a mindset is hard - really hard.
