I would like to try this again but first can I just let you know that I am an atheist who is trying to understand the religious point of view. This is not the same thing agreeing with them but I truly am trying to see it from their angle. I want to step into their shoes and I want to feel it the way they feel it and in that way, hopefully try to solve problems with them instead of against them. This is empathy. This is peace.
About the name I use - Evangelia is my Mothers name and the English version of that is Angela. It makes me happy to see my mothers name. David is a biblical name to but that doesnt mean people named David are religious.
When you ASSUME you make an ASS out of U and ME
Oh , and I should also add that I have no interest in making friends , empathizing with , or getting along with unlettered , delusional , bigoted , homophobic , misogynistic , barbarous , religitards . So long as they attempt to change society and pass laws in accordance with their primitive , tribal , immoral , Bronze Aged , sky - god beliefs , they are enemies of human dignity , freedom , knowledge and civilization , and I will fight and resist them to my last breath , as any ethical , thinking human being should .
You forgot to mention, tacky dressers and halitosis.
All kidding aside, I agree, mostly. I do sometimes want to get into their skulls and try to figure out how they "think", the better to combat their bullshit. And that can be hard to do without talking to them semi-civilly.
For me the religious views of people are beyond rational understanding. They start out believing a father figure exists somewhere outside of our understanding. They say they cannot know his mind but they claim to have his word and that he will make them immortal if they follow it. There are now hundreds of these cults all with their own interpretations of the bible which in itself is a version of a translation. This is ridiculous behaviour for adults.
So I have no interest or desire to help them reconcile their disgusting beliefs about homosexuality or contraception. I would give them some leeway if these beliefs did not affect the lives of people who do not believe the same as them. The Catholic Church is responsible for the pain and suffering of thousands of people in Africa due to it barbaric stance on condoms. It also gives tacit approval to governments like Uganda with their “Kill Gays” bill. Pope Benny had no problems shaking hands with their foreign minister recently. I am sick of listening to the bile that vomits forth from the mouths of these people. I will not act as an apologist for any of them. I actively campaign with Amnesty or by direct action myself against these corrupt institutions. I name and shame them wherever and whenever I can.Anyone that tries to pass off such BS that is the O.T. is a "Westboro Phelps" to me.
So I really do not care what the Bible says about how anyone should behave. The O.T. is a vile and disgusting guide for living. As for being a “devout” Catholic, I prefer to use the words “more deluded” than the rest of the sheep. A devout catholic is a fundamentalist. I have no Empathy for them.
Granted I reduce their numbers every year by actively engaging with them on the nature of belief in god rather than on the merits (or not) of their theology. Even last Saturday I help de-convert a Jehovah Witness. My powder is always dry and my guns are staying close by and fully loaded.
I agree with your approach. If we can't think outside the box, we can't move forward.
A blanket refusal to even look seems highly inconsistent with a rationalist position. Richard Dawkins - big brain, little tiny ears and eyes.
Angela - are you saying you're against homosexuality? If so, I have to disagree with you. I think it's morality neutral. Or rather, speaking as a straight person, it looks like a whole lot of fun.
"speaking as a straight person, it looks like a whole lot of fun"
Seems a bit oxymoronic.
I think one would need to be pretty intolerant to view me as a bigot because I find the idea of a big wet pash with someone else with a beard to be thoroughly disgusting.
Me too ;)
Lol. So then I'm a lesbian? Cool. Do I get an ID card? I believe this is the first time I've ever been been able to identify with an oppressed minority segment (outside of the big A).
@ Mike - I'm not talking about the sex-with-a-man part, just the anarchic free-thinking / wit / humour / music / etc.
That, Simon, is indeed a very under-contemplated benefit to homosexuality. So many straight people think about sex when they think about homosexuality, but in a long term relationship, heterosexuals fail to evaluate what percentage of time together is spent in sexual activity, and what percentage is spent in other interaction. I'm impressed by your understanding.
@ Strega - thanks. Outsiders' perspective, maybe.
When I think of lesbians, I think of love and companionship.
When I think of gays. I think of non stop bonking.
Why do you suppose that is, Angela? I mean logically, you must know that men need love and companionship too, so...?
