I would like to try this again but first can I just let you know that I am an atheist who is trying to understand the religious point of view. This is not the same thing agreeing with them but I truly am trying to see it from their angle. I want to step into their shoes and I want to feel it the way they feel it and in that way, hopefully try to solve problems with them instead of against them. This is empathy. This is peace.

About the name I use  - Evangelia is my Mothers name and the English version of that is Angela. It makes me happy to see my mothers name. David is a biblical name to but that doesnt mean people named David are religious.

Mortal sin has to involve a grave matter like murder - Once again, it does not have to involve something serious like murder. Masturbation is a mortal sin, according to your dogma.

Catholics always have the get out of hell card - confession. Just keep on , whatever, raping little boys, masturbation, off to confession, all is forgiven. Catholics are genius at twisting any statement to suit, as they did with contraception. It is a Mortal sin to masturbate. Robert, if he does answer any questions, will have the catholic twist, it may be, it could be, a mortal sin, then comes the big BUT.

Now, I understood that one thing distinguishing mortal from venal sins is that confession doesn't work for mortal sins. Of course, that's not from the mouth of a Catholic theologian but from the Catholic kids I grew up with.

They'll only come to change their opinions when they become good friends with a gay person. It's the human element that fosters a change in belief more than the logical, because after all, the basis of religious attachment is an experience that a person feels. If you change how someone feels, they'll rationalize whatever they need to to make their new beliefs work.

They don't have to admit God was wrong, they just have to admit that there are cultural influences placed in the Bible that just don't apply with what we know about people and the world today.

Case in point: Sen. Rob Portman changes his stance on gay marriage because his son is gay.

Strega - Simon

(im just throwing this around)

if 9 out of 10 are born heterosexual etc

then i wonder how many of those 9 need to be married in order to support the ones who dont marry, become mentally ill, criminal etc.

I wonder how many of those 9 are actually in the closet. And then I wonder how many of those who are in the closet have been given a religious upbringing, or are currently living in an hostile religious environment.

Angela- the construction of your post there seems to indicate that it is only the unmarried who become mentally ill, criminal, etc.

Nobody needs to be married, but everyone needs civil rights.  Detach the two and we're in business.

I seem to have a probem with the way I say things ... Im not the best at splainin.

I just mean those who don't reproduce or enter into the mainstream for whatever reason.

because even though 9 out of 10 may be heterosexual, if we break it down again maybe only 3 of those nine actually marry, reproduce and get the mortgage.

I think the mortgage has something to do with this also. That long term lockdown till death.

After all - why is the word MORT in mortgage.

and yes I know that gay people buy houses too but ... (i havent thought about that yet)

My best line ever was to a girl who I did not want anything to do with. She was upset and basically called me gay so I said "No I am not, but thanks for the complement" The series of expressions on her face was amazing.

This is empathy. This is peace.

It's hard to think this way when religious doctrine states unbelievers will roast in hell for eternity.

Ok but then I just start to wonder if comments like that are made because atheists are conditioned  to respond like that by their peers.

to me - comments like that are entertaining and have good debate value i suppose.

But Im thinking more along the lines of how to have a conversation about it.

One way to step into the shoes of the religiously gullible is a prefrontal lobotomy or perhaps massive whole brain irradiation . I cannot honestly think of any other method .
Oh , and I should also add that I have no interest in making friends , empathizing with , or getting along with unlettered , delusional , bigoted , homophobic , misogynistic , barbarous , religitards . So long as they attempt to change society and pass laws in accordance with their primitive , tribal , immoral , Bronze Aged , sky - god beliefs , they are enemies of human dignity , freedom , knowledge and civilization , and I will fight and resist them to my last breath , as any ethical , thinking human being should .
