not all straight guys are like that , there are some out there that are on your side. I know a few . you should have been around in the late 60's when it was against the law and you would see how far gay men & women have come. Just look at Ellen , no one would have been openly gay on TV back then, or adopted babies, got married , were openly gay. it take a long time for things to change but it is happening. Some high schools now have Gay rights associations. I didn't know Green Day were gay , I must be getting old ......
I didn't mean to imply that there aren't straight men who are staunchly pro-equality. I just meant to say that even men such as these, or even queer men are also subject to the stigmatization of homosexuality. A person's feeling toward the stigma and towards homosexuality itself can be two entirely different things, or so I believe. It is becoming less and less of an issue with time.
Regarding Green Day, none of the members are gay to the best of my knowledge. That was just the rumor floating around my school at the time. I remember this one in particular because, in retrospect, it was uncharacteristically irrational for me to react to the rumor so strongly. I wasn't typically like that as a child, and was more than accustomed to holding unpopular viewpoints (and taking flack for it).
Ellen is a good example of progression, especially with the recent JC Penny/ "million" moms deal put to rest. Certainly leaps and bounds from when she came out on her sitcom. In my home province, schools are going to be required to have gay-straight alliances. There are lots of signs of cultural shift. It's just a shame that humanity has to go through the same damn thing so many times.
Ah, yes. "I want my kid to be the football star I wasn't quite"
Kids are individuals, and shouldn't be shoehorned into being just like their same-sex parent only slightly improved.
I would be curious to know/understand the interactions of early homo sapiens in the context of homosexuality and the group dynamics involved.
I believe would think the incidents of homosexual behavior in other orders of mammals are statistically very low in comparison to heterosexual interactions. Evolution and natural selection functions to ensure species survival and procreation. Would it be fair to say that homosexual behavior is possibly an anomaly among lower order mammals?
On a personal level I am indifferent to homosexuality. I possess no phobias or ill will towards the LGBT community. I admit I don't fully understand it but that is not important. What is vital is to make people realize that religious doctrine is wrong to condemn or attempt to punish those that choose that lifestyle. I am inclined to think that the rejection of homosexual behavior was generated long before organized religion came to exist. Whether originally out of fear or ignorance I do not know. Certainly the time has long since come to undo the fear and ignorance and replace it with acceptance and respect.
Well depends on which religion we are talking about some do actually encourage bisexuality and homosexuality. But I do think that Christianity, Judaism and Islam is root of homophobia, or rather they have become the root of homophobia
I've never understood homophobia. It's a strange one. Do people get out of bed and think "arrrgh, there's gays out there, I'm repulsed and offended?" What a pathetic, blinkered, and insecure way to spend our short time in this world.
As for religion, it's certainly the biggest enemy of the GLBT community. Take the Catholic Church, where I'm from, a bishop in a dress and a funny hat came out (no pun intended) against gay marriage and adoption, taking the view that it would deprive children of a traditional upbringing which should include a mother and a father. Coming from an institution which systematically raped children and covered it up, it's just breathtaking that their views are given such weight. What is it about old celibate virgin males in dresses, who feel qualified on such matters? Oh yea, they are men of faith. I almost forgot.
Well said !!!!! i believe that you are spot on
Just to set the record straight, I sincerely don't care what people do to their bodies or in their bedroom. My problem comes in when those who do those things bring their lifestyle into the public square and try to influence everyone to accept their behavior. Like I said, I really don't give a damn so stop trying to make other people feel like they are doing something wrong by not accepting your behavior as "normal." I just read that Obama's nanny was outcast because she's "bi-sexual"..now watch the members of this culture condemn the cultural "norms" of Indonesia and start using their position in the world to make them feel they are on the wrong side of right. Talk about different forms of imperialism, this is akin to christian missionaries telling people their god is false and they have the true "religion."
You know, Shabaka, I had thought you were just a troll but it turns out that you really are a bigot.
Yep, that pretty much sums it up.
lol when all else fails, discredit them. One day please tell me more of why I'm a bigot.
