Is Katy Perry's American Music Awards performance culturally insensitive?

Or is it just another case of political correctness gone wild?

Opening the awards with what has to be one of the most creative and gorgeous production numbers ever performed on TV, Perry dances in a kimono-inspired outfit, a creative decision which has her accused of the political correctness "crime" of "cultural appropriation."

The irony, of course, is that similar appropriations occur in Japanese entertainment all the time. Japanese entertainment is outrageous and eclectic. For example, here is a dinner theater performance at the famous Tokyo Robot Restaurant. See how many cutural appropriations you can count:
